Happy Holidays to all,

Is SAE 90 the correct oil to use on my 1967 3 speed manual? I have a 250 Inline 6 with 3 on the tree.

You could run that, or an 85/140....the old 3 spds ran a pretty heavy gear oil, & I see you are in the southwest. crazyAl

Thanks for the reply.

I am running Lucus 90 weight in my rear-end. Does Lucus make a 85/140 weight? Can I use Lucus oil, or is there a special name brand Chevy used for the transmision?

If all else fails, just put mineral oil in the tranny. Yep, I laughed too, but the dealer had us do that to a tranny on one of the County Highway Department trucks. It was done to solve a hard engagement problem with the tranny. It was still working when I left the shop for another job.

If you're considering synthetic, take a look at Redline MTL. It's formulated especially for use in manual transmissions and is designed to improve synchro operation. I ran it in our old Miata.

AFAIK, Chevy used straight 90W GL-4 in these transmissions.
Straight 90W is no longer carried at any auto parts in my area for the last decade or more. The modern equivalent would be 85/90W, with GL-5 being most prevalent. You should run GL-4 in the transmission because of the brass syncros - something to do with sulphur content, I think.
I have been running GL-5 in mine with a recent tear down due to bearing failure at 250,000 miles - no syncro problems I could see other than normal wear and tear.

No brand name in particular. Most the oil companies package this, it pretty much depends on what your local auto parts store happens to carry. Me, I get whatever's the lowest price.
