Tailgate Concept
Ive been toying with the idea of making my tailgate on my 72 removeable like on later 70's-Present pickups. Im thinking I can notch my tailgate on one side and modify the hinge to have flats to slip tailgate on. Just wondering if anyone has done something like this or what ideas you may have. Pics would be great. Thanks.

Actually.... I have and I love it. I used the passenger side tailgate bracket off of a 73 and up and notched my tailgate on the bottom....works perfect!!! I'll take pics tomorrow

I did a long time ago on a truck I plowed snow with to see better when backing.I haven't on any other trucks because I never need to take the tailgate off.If I do need to,it's no big deal to pull two bolts from one side and remove.I worry about the theft thing,too.

all i did was take a hacksaw to the tailgate on the bottom where it hinges and cut out a small section of the tailgate very simple. it took longer to take the two bolts out...

I thought about doing that as well but i'd like to make it to where it wont come off unless tilted at a certain angle which would require a hinge with flat sides on it. Im thinking that a 1975-80 Chevy hinge should be the correct diameter and could possibly bolt right on.

I considered this the other day when I put on my tailgate. I am so use to the late model ones that can be removed in seconds. The only hinges i had laying around where from 99-up tailgates and would not work , so I went ahead and put it back like it came. Next time it is off might have to add that to the list along with tailgate cables. They would make it look so much cleaner back there. jim
