grounding strap
If I dont have my ground strap that goes from the firewall to the engine then my starter wont turnover right. Well Ive been having trouble with my starter i wired it all up and it just clicks. I have a brand new battery, cables, wiring harness, starter. My dad brought the idea of those braided ground straps. Is this my problem or can you guys give me any tips. Thanks

Brian, I have a small braided cable that connects the cab to the frame underneath on the passenger side. And I know my frame to engine has a good ground. Just curious, does your batt. neg. cable connect to your engine or the frame? I've personnally have not had a firewall to engine strap but the cab - frame - engine can be connected any which way and should work. I believe that all 3 should all be connected together as a whole common ground.

If the neg cable is to the engine, then all the srtaps in the world are not going to help. The engine is the best place to put the cable, if it is to your frame, try bolting it directly to the engine...any bolt hole will do. (as long as you clean the grease/oil/grime/paint first.
If you are already wired up like this, try jump starting it. Even though it is a new battery, it may have sat on the shelf for 2 months, and in transit and storage for 6 months...ect. |

I agree with longhornmail. Throw a trickle charger or jump starter on the battery. could have lost charge. common problem.

I had a 65 chev with a 350 and put an HEI in it. Had neg cable connected to engine and the engine ran rough. Connected a ground strap and it ran smooth as silk, don't know why. Adding a ground strap can't hurt.

Sorry about the hazy reply. The guys are right about the batt. neg. cable to the engine mostly because thats where the starter is. I'm implying that all 3 areas( cab, frame, engine) should be all connected together are for a general healthy negative grounding for everything electrical on the truck.
