Well, since it's been well over a year since I owned a 67-72, I haven't kept up on the mods and such that owners are doing these days. My mom found a 71 C30 Flatbed that she really likes and wants for me as I am starting a college welding course. So my question is, what mods are guys doing to their trucks these days? HID's? Gauges? I really like the simple mods that do a lot. Thanks, Bradley

Gauge replacements (AutoMeter for me) are popular.
Late model power plants are everywhere.
Airbag suspension setups.

And tons of other stuff that is just owner-preference.

Whoa, whoa, whoa! I said C30, not C10! heh Gauges, definitely. Late model powerplant, Duramax! (It's less expensive than people think.)

I have seen a Duramax thread on here lately and it was a KILLER looking build.

Even a C30 can have airbags....You just might wanna "SuperSize" them.

I havent seen a 67-72 Dmax thread on "here" but I've seen em other places. I'd bag it, but it will be used for work and hauling heavy stuff.

It's actually a panel build, but it still counts as a Duramax.

All these can apply to a C/30.Isn't the Duramax a late model power plant?Air bags were first used on heavy trucks and buses.I made a custom 4-link air bag suspension on my '95 K3500.I just watched Truck-U on Speed last night and they put a bolt-on set-up on an F350 4wd.It's pretty cool for lowering to work out of and to hitch up to trailers.You get high weight capacity along with a great ride.Not to mention all the adjustability.I don't see trends evolve specifically to C/30s changing on a month to month or year by year basis.I think Putter's last line says it all.You have an inquiring mind and I bet you could start a trend or two with some of your own ideas.

The most radical mod I have EVER done is to go from full wheel covers to rallies. It is a little to wild for me though, so I will be putting the wheel cover back on.

No,nothing purdy at all.The 71/72s with 9/16 studs and spreader plates can accept the centers for 2pc simulators.Guys used to paint them up,like the bigger trucks did...like red or black wheels with silver lugs and rims.I put chrome Budds on my '70 back in the '80s.That took some work.I now have the same wheels on my '71 wrecker.

Ew, I hate simulators. If you want the chrome look, buy chrome wheels. They make me thing of the ricers with chrome hubcaps. Same thing.

I modded my '72 with a 6.2 diesel. Runs great, hauls anything. May turbo it someday, who knows?

air bags are a great idea on a heavy hauler. Not only can you increase the load capacity, but you can keep it at a lower height, both for looks and ease of loading, and on top of that, it won't rattle your teeth when driving empty. Other than cost and added maintenance, it is a win/win/win modification.
Most of all, it is your truck, do what ever you want. If you feel a late model diesel is a good idea, and affordable, go for it. You'll have ppl who love it, and then a group of haters. Just do your research real carfully and see i that's what you want. Nothing is cheap on the engine you mentioned. Even the fuel is more expensive. Up till 2007 when the feds made us switch to a more refined ultra low sulfer diesel, it jacked up the price considerably.
You can do 99% of the same things on a c/30 as you can a c/10. it's the same cab, doors, inside parts, hood and fenders. It's all the same, just a taller and thicker frame that is a little longer.

92-93 chevy 6.5l turbo diesel, relable and still mechanical injection. easy swap, just use a surge tank and a electric fuel pump to feed the injection pump.

I had a brain fart when he said airbags. For some reason I was thinking he meant slammed. lol

Engine; just because fuel costs more doesnt mean it all does. Everything you own got to you by something diesel powered, and it's not for the hell of it. Lower maintenance costs, better mpg, better power, etc.

A take out Duramax will run $3500-$5000. An Allison will run $2000-$3800. And a driveshaft. Plus of course a rad, a fuel tank, and hydroboost. And wiring.

I love 6.2/6.5 engines, but I also love Cummins and Duramax. The Duramax is a great choice for highway and hill driving.

A take out Duramax for $3500-$5000? I'd bet they have 200k plus or had an intake fire and are good for a long block to build. Darn nice engines but mighty pricey. Hope you build one, it'd be really cool.

look into typical repairs and cost of replacement parts. I work on diesels for a living... they aren't cheap.
A diesel in a big truck is ment to last a million miles, as is the truck.
A diesel in a light duty truck (one ton and less) is only designed to live half that, becouse they know the truck won't last as long. I know many pick ups do last that long, but they are the minority.
I'm just saying, your dollar would probably go further with another choice.
