98 Suburban Dash Layout

Can anyone tell me what the three delete plates on the dash between the radio and the instrument panel are for?

I took off my dash as I have an intermittant problem with the lights staying on the 4X4 indicators. There were three wiring harnesses stuffed in the crack near the delete plates so just wondered if these were left like that from the factory or the PO wrapped them up there.

Also, are the 4X4 selector buttons illuminated? They have orange lights when engaged but are the buttons lit up when the lights are on? Also, is the headlight switch illuminated too?

Re: 98 Suburban Dash Layout

On my 98 GMC PU, the center one is for the cargo light switch and the bottom one is for the pass side airbag switch. I used the top one for the security light.

Re: 98 Suburban Dash Layout

The top panel is the rear window wiper control if I remember correctly.
The middle is the cargo lamp switch for trucks.
The lower is the Pass Air Bag key-switch to turn off the air bag.

The 4wd buttons are illuminated with the headlights. The bulbs cannot be replaced, you will have to replace the push-buttons to have them illuminate again. One side of mine quit working and I tore it all apart to try to replace the bulb but you can't; it is part of the circuit board. It was more trouble than its worth to try to de-solder them.
The headlight switch is also illuminated. Not sure about being able to replace those bulbs.

Missing your owners' manual? No Haynes or Chilton's manual?

Re: 98 Suburban Dash Layout

Thanks for the replies. I don't have any of those extras so the delete plates and wiring harnesses make sense.

I'll have to take the I/P panel off again to see if I unhooked those 4X4 lights. They are really chintzy considering it was such a major breakthrough from having the manual shift levers on the floor. You'd think they would have put more beef in them.

I do have a manual but I can't see where it ever says what is lit up when the headlights are on! That's what drives you nuts. Half of my radio doesn't light up either but I can live with that. Can't switch to AM since the PO hit the button with a 2x4 riding in the back.

It's a lot more complicated than my '67 GMC that's for sure!
