To get the air out just jack the front of the truck up a little and run it as you're adding the coolant with the heater on high. Any air in the system will go to the highest point. If you have air in the system usually your air will blow cold when you come to a stop or just every now and then.

So will the thermostat open if the radiator cap is off? I dont think it will but being a bbc 454 the cooling system is different than a small block.

It should open when operating temp is met. When your engine is hot, you should see coolant waterfalling in your radiator.
