M1006 CUCV ? CrewCab 2wd to 4wd Conversion
Well I've had a 1981 GMC 1ton 454ci crew 2wd dually for several months now, I couldn't decided if I wanted to drop it down or 4x4 it.
Think I've decided to go for a 4x4 srw conversion.. Love the look but any decent K30 around here goes for big bucks so I'll build my own (or at least try). Parts truck is a 1984 Chevy M1008 1.25ton that ended up having a blown head gasket and mild rust that isn't worth repairing to me (GL gamble). I plan to keep the 454 in the crew for a while but would like to do a cummins swap. Swapping the m1008 dog house and bed onto the crew, the th400 trans and np208 case, then obviously both axles and spring mounts. Will find a small lift to fit my 37in radial TSLs that have been sitting in the polebarn forever. Gonna put them on 2pc hummer rims. I then plan to paint the crew in the 3 color mil spec paint to match all our other military toys.

Re: M1006 CUCV ? CrewCab 2wd to 4wd Conversion
Look forward to your conversion. I have a USAF Civy K3500 Crew Cab so if you need pictures of anything let me know. The engine is out too.
If you could come up with the front hubs for the front axle you could leave the rear end a dually and make a M1028A4 Are your battery cables still unbutchered from the firewall terminal block to the batteries in the CUCV and if so would you be interested in selling them?

Re: M1006 CUCV ? CrewCab 2wd to 4wd Conversion
I'll check the batt cables tonight... I know I cut the one going to the starter cause I rounded a bolt off.
I had today off so I spent a little time yanking the motor out. She drove into the pole barn just fine but smoked constantly from drivers pipe and oil in radiator. Ended up just throwing it in the back of a deuce for scrap. Kept alts and starter.

Re: M1006 CUCV ? CrewCab 2wd to 4wd Conversion
I started a similar project using a 2wd 87' body, and M1008 frame and axles. I think the easiest way to do it is to swap everything over to the M1008 frame, which is very heavy duty by the way. The down side would be if you are worried about having different VIN's on the frame and cab. In Texas I don't think that is a big deal. With the crewcab, I guess there isn't an easy way of doing.

Let me know what you need, I think all the glow plugs are shot and the IP leaks. I don't know anyone who wants a 6.2 in need of work and I don't want it so it'll go to the junk man.

Re: M1006 CUCV ? CrewCab 2wd to 4wd Conversion
The m1008 has a one ton frame and all crewcabs have 1 ton frames. The cucv front frame clip I have is exactly the same height and thickness as my crewcab frame

Re: M1006 CUCV ? CrewCab 2wd to 4wd Conversion
Haven't forgot about this thread... Only been able to work on it a few days this past month. We've got about 2ft of snow and ~15 degree temps so that doesnt motivate me much either. I've got the front suspension off, so I'll probably drag the other truck in and start on the swap. I want to get the front end done before starting the back half. And I'm not looking forward to drilling and torching off all those rivets in the back.

Take lots of pictures as I am doing this as well. I was going to go with the single rear wheels, but the duallys are just badass. As for removing the rivets from the rear, I removed them all to mount my 14b and after I was done I decided I wanted to go back to dually. They are not fun to cut off!

Re: M1006 CUCV ? CrewCab 2wd to 4wd Conversion
I feel your pain, I got my motor swapped Thanksgiving weekend and got it turning over last Friday during our scorture day but 15 degree temps is a killer especially when I'm doing it in the driveway.
