Wood Bed Floor, Wood Type?

Sorry if this has been discussed on here before, but what type of wood came stock in beds with wood floors? I think it looks like cedar but I am not sure. Thanks Matt

Re: Wood Bed Floor, Wood Type?

Cedar is one of the softest woods out there and would be destroyed rather quickly if anything was hauled in the bed. I am not positive but I think they were oak. Most guys seem to replace with oak but any high strength hardwood like ash, oak, maple, walnut would provide excellent results

Re: Wood Bed Floor, Wood Type?

Most guys cannot tell the difference between oak and ash. Ash is high quality wood

Re: Wood Bed Floor, Wood Type?

This probably has nothing to do with pickup trucks. Mine is a one ton flatbed. I researched and found out that the really hard wood used on the floor of semi-truck trailers is a tropical hardwood called Apitong. This stuff is incredibly hard and durable. It will most likely out live my truck.

Re: Wood Bed Floor, Wood Type?

I believe it was mostly yellow pine and it was painted. Go to bedwoodandparts.com and look at all the goodies.....I'm going with Hickory.
BTW anybody used this company lately?

John bed wood looks great. Did you put a stain on it or just clear? What kind of clear coat did you use?

Re: Wood Bed Floor, Wood Type?

Thanks for the info guys. I knew you would know what was used. I think I am going to go with oak and then stain it black. I plain to run stainless strips and hardware on my 68. The grill will be black as will the tailgate lettering. All set off by hugger orange. When I am finally done if I ever am I will post pics up. Still have a long way to go. Matt

Re: Wood Bed Floor, Wood Type?

remember you can stain it to any color you like. Think about your paint color too. My yellow truck looks great with a amber natural ash as shown here.

Re: Wood Bed Floor, Wood Type?

They originally came with Southern yellow pine which is why so many of them rotted out. I personally do not recommend using Red Oak, since it is open cell wood and will absorb water and will soon expand and peel off the finish. Here is my white oak version. White oak is closed cell and will not absorb water. Teak is the best, but super expensive. Other good choices for external use are Ipe and locust.
