no start

its a 71 with a 250 auto, single barrel rochester. drove it all day, came home, went to go start it an hour later and it would crank and crank but no dice. completely rebuilt the carb. still nothing. seems like its not getting fuel. checked pump pressure. good. filters good. at a loss. when it cranks it seems to not want to start, but as soon as i release the key it acts like it will fire.. i dont get it.

any suggestions would help. thanks.

Re: no start

Have you tried pouring gas down the carb then cranking it to see if itll start? Have you checked for spark? What kind of dizzy is it?

Re: no start

If you're still running the points distributor, check the wire that runs from the starter solenoid back up to the + side of the coil. It's there to provide a full 12V to the coil while starting. You may also want to verify that there is power to the + side of the coil when the key is on, and also while cranking.

If you're running an HEI, then you will want to get your ignition module checked at a parts store, as it has probably died on you.

Good luck!

Re: no start

i have pored gas down the carb, and it reacted a little better but nothing to promising. i have the electronic conversion on my dizzy and have good spark. im only getting 11.7v to the coil and starter though. im confused, and this isint my first rodeo either. like i said, came home, and an hour later she wouldn't start. i have checked and re-checked. im lost here...

Re: no start

I know you said that you have good spark, but it still does sound to me like the electronic unit is bad or that your coil has died on you. If you've got fuel, compression and spark, it pretty much has to run, or at least try.

Swapping out the coil is an easy test, and a harder test is to put the points back in it and see what you get.

With the 11.7 volts to the coil, it sounds like you are still using the original resistor wire to run the (I'm assuming pertronix) electronic unit. Which is fine so long as you don't open up the plug gap more than the .035 for the points setup.
