Where to find carrier bearing support??

I just picked up a 70 GMC wrecker in need of a full restoration. The first thing I would like to do with it is get it driving and stopping. She runs fine but needs brake work and a new center carrier bearing.
My problem is this-the entire mount for the bearing is rotted out. There isn't even enough to use to copy to make a new one. What are my options? Is this a part that is available in the aftermarket world? I have looked long ad hard but have had no luck. I also measured from u joint to u joint to consider a 1 pc shaft but it measures 84.5"! Yikes! Is that even possible??
Any help would be great. Thanks

Sounds cool, a wrecker. Try cpp for the carrier. Check out this thread,

Good luck. Got any pictures?

Re: Where to find carrier bearing support??

That's the carrier bearing all right but I am in need of the crossmember it bolts to. The factory part is riveted to the chassis but it's pretty much shot.

Re: Where to find carrier bearing support??

I had a bracket once for the wider carrier bearing bolted right to the stock crossmember. Has anyone else seen one of these and what did they come on. The one i had was off of a 1972 gmc 1/2 with leaf springs. bolted right on my 72 chevy with coils

Re: Where to find carrier bearing support??

Jay, that part is needed if using the lowered crossmember available at a number of places. It's an adapter plate of sorts. I need the portion of the chassis that it bolts to.
Thanks for lookin out!

Re: Where to find carrier bearing support??

I have a 67 C20 chassis I am parting out. I will try to look tonight and see which style it has. Do you need the whole crossmember or just the bracket?

Re: Where to find carrier bearing support??

I need the entire crossmember from frame to frame. On mine, it seems to be riveted with 3 rivets on each side. Thanks

Re: Where to find carrier bearing support??

Just about any carrier bearing support from 60 to 72 will interchange (73 up bodystye will work also, subject to being open minded about modification, a simple peice of good thick channel iron will work.). Cut out the old rivits with a cold chisel and a punch, or grind or drill them out. I wouldnt use a cutting torch on the frame because its made of cold roll stamped steel and this made cause frame cracks later on. if you dont want to do that, cut the support about 4 inches from the frame and fab a new one in (I have used 1/8 thick (about) 1 inch square box tubing, drops into the chanel). or you can cut the old one out, pick a new location and drill new holes in the frame to mount it in. If you do this, use a small rat tail file (like is used on a chainsaw) and round out the edges where you drilled. On the factory frames, the holes were punched while the frame was still red hot, as well as the punching process making the metal around the hole denser. if you leave the edges square, they are subject to cracking.

Re: Where to find carrier bearing support??

I have a frame from a 72 C20 heavy duty(camper special). the cross-member looks nothing like what you show. It goes from top lip to bottom lip on both sides and the drive line goes through the cross-member with the carrier bearing holder bolting to the back of the cross-member. This is a leaf-spring truck, so no other brackets bolt to it. On a coil spring truck the rear arms bolt to this cross-member.

Re: Where to find carrier bearing support??

I was not thinking about your truck being leaf spring suspension. I will look but my trucks are coil spring suspension and I am not sure if they have that style or not.

Re: Where to find carrier bearing support??

After upgrading engine/tranny, and trutrac re, I went thru 3 stockers. I then tried the CPP billet one. It's been 4 years now, never had that problem again. Call CPP, see if they have one for your setup..

Re: Where to find carrier bearing support??

The one on my camper special looks like the one Todd68 is showing, except it doesn't have the brackets for the trailing arms and the carrier bearing bracket is magnum and bolts behind the crossmember.

Re: Where to find carrier bearing support??

Sounds like I'll be fabricating something for this to work. No worries....we have the technology! lol
I found this on ebay. They claim factory nos for 67-74 GMC truck. Does this look right? Seems to look identical to what I already have.

Re: Where to find carrier bearing support??

Man, I haven't seen one yet that looked like m 68 C20 Custom camper with leaf springs. My hanger was riveted to the back top of the crossmember. The bearing was in a metal horseshoe that bolted two halves together. You just changed the rubber donut with the bearing in it out. Unfortunately couldn't find exact copy so replaced with NAPA. Had to use a square tubing spacer to move centerline of bearing back to right location.
