Final Oil Sending Unit Question

Hello to all

From what I gather, to keep the original configuration, the oil sending unit is located in the rear of the manifold next to the distributor. My simple questions are: do the local parts store carry it? I have checked the common ones like autozone and pepboys. So far LMC is the only one I see having it. Second, does the gauge require anything else besides the tubing to go on the back? I can see a light bulb for night driving. What is the best way to run the tubing? ( gauge to sending unit or vice versa?) Any help is greatly appreciated.

there is no oil sending unit. its a fitting for an oil line that goes to a mechanical oil gauge

I was going by the part in LMC parts catalog. Item 20. I have shopped at local parts store and the ones they carry do not have for the tubing to go on. I more than believe the one LMC carries is the part you are refering to

I am a little confused, but that is kind of normal by your description. The original oil pressure gage does not have a sending unit, just hooked to a fitting on the back of the intake by the distributor on a 350 with copper tubing. 454 and L6s are different.

The light is hooked up to the dash light wires for night driving and so it can be dimmed if the dash lights are.

Item 20 is the Oil Pressure Switch.

Reason I am asking this is because the 72 Chevy C10 has a 305 from a 79 Chevy Silverado. Right now we dont have the gauge showing any reading because it is not connected

Maybe people are taiking at cross purposes? Correct me if I am worng (Someone always does). If you have a mechanical gauge then there is a line that runs from the fitting on the engine to the back of the gauge. If you have an electrical gauge or an idiot light then there is either a switch (idiot light) or a pressure sensor (transducer) that generates the signal to drive the electrical gauge.

You are correct. I do believe the part from LMC will complete the connection. The tube will be between the sending unit from the block to the gauge on the dash.

Thank you for the reply. I do have some tubing. I just need the end that goes on the block and I want to make sure the one LMC carries is the correct one. All local parts store are stumped.

If it is not electrical it is not called a sending unit. I think that is what is confusing us. The tube is available from most parts stores in a kit with the fittings. It comes in copper or plastic tubeing. Make sure it does not rub anything or get burnt. It.s a good idea to slide vacuum hose over it in critical areas. It it breaks you can ruin an engine &/or get oil sprayed all over.

LMC calls it a Oil Pressure Switch if you look at link to it. Bottom line is the problem can be solved by either getting it from them or using a an alternate fitting. Should I do that, where should I look for it? Any measurements by chance?

Item 20 is for just a idit light with no gauge.

And the set up in the pics is what you get with most cheper gauge setup kits.

After looking twice over, yes you are right. I would have ordered the wrong part. So question is where can I get the fitting that goes with the tubing?

Autozone, advance, napa and other so called auto parts stores dont have real parts. LMC is a good place with good quality. I remember not too long ago you could go into your local parts store and set at the counter on a bar stool and shoot the breeze and eat free popcorn while getting your parts......the people there also had knowledge about automobiles..................I sure miss those days............they also sold paint and could mix to any color..
