Dana 44 - Broken Spider Gear

I was starting to do a rebuild on my dana 44 front axle, and decided to pull the diff cover before i started to get to far into doing the rebuild. I found that the drivers side spider gear had teeth that where broken off, and several that where cracked.

How hard is it to replace spider gears? I know people say do not attempt to change gear ratios in a axle if it is your first time because it is a hard thing to do. So I am trying to figure out if I want to replace the spider gears, or just spend the money on a different dana 44.

Thanks, Matt

Re: Dana 44 - Broken Spider Gear

Changing spider gears is no big deal. The biggest thing to be concerned about is "where did the pieces go?" You have to be very meticulous about cleaning the housing out before you put this back together. The pieces can get up into the pinion area and through-out the bearings too. A lot of solvent and patience will be your friend here.
