What is this? Posi?

After finding out that my Dana 44 front axle had missing teeth from the spider gears i decided to pull the diff cover on my 14 bolt and I am not sure if this is a posi or what. The axle came out of a 1980 K20 if that helps figure out what it is.

So what is it? Is it a Posi or something else?

Thanks, Matt

that is an early gov-lock..if you look by the ring gear, the ratchet part is there..they are ok...not the strongest unit out there though.

Yup, Gov lock. They "seem to" work a little better in 14bolts for some reason? I don't really know why, they have the same little clock-works inside.
The easiest way to tell is by the holes for the spieder-gear shafts. Gov-locks have 3 and an "open" differential has 4.

Re: What is this? Posi?

At least on the truck I used to have, when one wheel would spin, it would like together like a spool. Not sure if it's supposed to have some give, but mine didn't seem to. I was having some fun destroying some junk 33s, smoking both tires off.

Even with an extended cab long box, the truck would "lurch" while turning. A posi will give a little, a locker or spool won't.

They are fine for the street, maybe lite wheeling, but too unpredictable for serious off roading.

Yeah I dont plan on offroading this truck a lot. it is going on my crew cab and the only offroad will be to get to like a deer hunting field.
