me and my best freind have been working on the 4x4 all day trying to get it to start. when we had the engine on some blocks, it turned fine. when we had it in the air it turned fine. when we had it almost on the transmission it turned fine. now that its all the way on and bolted to the transmission it wont budge any at all. whats causing it to be in a bind like this? it wouldnt freely slide back onto the clutch pilot shaft either, we had to pull it back to the transmission using bolts. we had to replace the pilot shaft bearing, is there different size bearings? we treid to turn the flywheel with a screwdriver on the flywheel and it almost bent the screwdriver (it was one of the really big ones) so whats causing it to not turn now that its on the transmission?
thanks for any help J.B. 1971 chevy 3/4 ton 4x4, 355 SB, SM465 4 speed manual, NP205 t-case, eaton 10 bolt corp rear with 4:10 gears (edited this ---> 1921 chevy 3/4 ton ) [This message has been edited by Blue_71 (edited March 25, 2002).]

Sorry man, But i have to ask if the tranny is in Neutral? Did you use a clutch alighment tool? Did you try to fit the new input shaft bushing over the input shaft before installing? Does the clutch feel right when you push it in? If you can't figure out whats up you are going to have to unbolt the tranny agian and find out. Something is not right there.

tranny is in neutral, i jacked up the rear and put the t-case in 2-hi and that turned fine, so i know its not in the t-case. the only thing i can figure out is the tranny must be locked up. we used a clutch alignment tool, but the guy who put the bearing in for me didnt try to fit it on the pilot shaft because he thought they were all the same.i guess tomarow i'll go get a turbo 350 from another freind of mine, he said i could use it untill i figured out whats up with the 4 speed.if its just the tranny locked like im thinking the TH350 should work fine if its ok, right?

Can you try disengaging the clutch? That would tell you if it's the tranny locked in two gears or something else.

Before something bends or breaks (hopefully not to late) seperate the trans from engine and look for the cause. The engine and trans should bolt up easily without having to pull it together with the bolts if everything is lined up correctly.

make sure you used the right clutch, pressure plate, and installed the throw-bearing correctly. I had to reorder my clutch package twice, when I noticed they gave me one that was smaller and thicker!! put mine together about a month ago and went perfect, but I had the whole body off too, good luck!

its in my freind garage now, and tomarow we're taking out the motor and if we cant find anything wrong in there we're going to drop down the 4 speed and put in the auto. cant disengage the clutch, z-bar wont fit up right for some reason. thats why we just put it in neutral (i treid this with the 2wd and it worked...)never took the throw out bearing out, and used the same clutch that came from it. dont mean its the right one though i guess....... the guy i bought it from said the motor wouldnt work when he bought it so i just replaced the motor, and trraded off the one it came with. turned out to be 40 over pistons in a block bored 20 is why the original 350 wouldnt work. im really hoping to find something simple tomarow when we take the motor out but if not i guess its auto time. i dont really like suto at all but i really need this thing done by friday

Pull the PTO cover off and have a peek inside. THat way you can twiddle a few gears around.
I'm thinkin' you got the throw-out bearing in front of the clutch fingers and when you pulled the motor on to the tranny, you put pressure on the back side of the clutch fingers. Getting everthing lined up is a bear. You definately need a lineup tool. I made the mistake of replacing my pressure plate bolts one time. I discovered that the bolts that hold the pressure plate on are very special, sholdered bolts. I could not get it to line up at all. I CANT BELIEVE THIS!!!!!!! we pulled the motor forward, and guess what, the dumb*** didnt do what i told him and tighten the pressure plate bolts!! i told him i hadnt done it yet and he needed to, and he never did so when we pulled out the line up tool of course it slid down and we didnt notice it. but im putting the auto in anyways, when we got it out we found out the 4 speed is messed up. one of the ears that the bellhousing bolts onto had been JB welded on and when we took it apart it broke again and there was a big hole behind it. so in goes the TH350 and when money allows a lokar shifter to look like a stock 4 speed....
