Replacing Upper Door Jamb on Cab - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I have a 76 crew cab that I'd like to start body work this spring. The truck is very rust-free with the exception of the upper door jamb on the cab. There was a sun visor installed on the truck and apparently it leaked for many years. My question is, what are my options for replacing/repairing this part of the cab? I've looked for replacement panels but I can't find any. I do have some cabs lying around that I could cut the pieces out of but I'd rather not ruin a cab if I don't have to. Any advice would be much appreciated.

no panels made get another cab or a roof from a another cab and cut out the pannels and get them welded in its crappy work im doing the same

Judging by the looks of the area above the windshield and above the passenger window inside the truck, the rot doesn't stop there. You'll have to cut it all out and weld in new metal if you really want to fix it right. There are no prefab patch panels for these areas. Best to go to the pull-a-part and find a donor.

I agree with BabyJay, My crew cab has the exact same rust problem. I bought it thinking it would be easy to fix. After pulling some of the rusted areas out and looking farther up in there there is more rust and rust that you cant get to/see without cutting the whole top end off. I am looking for a new cab with no luck as of yet! But that would be your best bet.

Stupid question, you had that truck a while I take it? I know I seen it for sale on CL about a year or so ago. That rust is what made me cross it off my list. Everything else was exactly what I was really wanting.
I just don't recall for sure if it was in Arkansas or Missouri now, I know it was somewhere over there and if I recall, something about Owasso was involved, but I've slept so many times since then I forget.

On to your best way to fix it, find another crew that has rotted out floors and rockers and cut it off about a foot down each windshield pillar, a few feet down the center pillar and about a foot down the cab corners. That way you have some room to play, but those areas will be the best choices to splice in the used roof assembly.
You could use a suburban roof as well, just have more work involved with a roof seam. If the rear door jambs are ok, you could use a regular cab and do it, but again you'd have a roof seam to make.

Thanks for the advice guys. I figured it might be a pain. The passenger side is in the same condition as the driver's side. It's not terrible but I'm tired of seeing it everytime I open the door. I'm not intending to make a show truck out of it. It will be used and worked. I'm not a novice at body work but I'm definitely no pro. I think I might be able to find a suburban pretty easy and do some cuttin and chopin on it to get my panels.

Randy, I had this truck listed on CL last year. Since then, I've sold some other projects and decided to keep this one. It's starting to come together nicely. That spot above the doors is pretty much my only issue. I just bought a TBI setup from 70BLAZERX2. A little rust ain't gonna keep this beast from snortin!

Replace the entire roof or cab, it will be easier in the long run. Jay

Thanks Jimmy. I think I might have a donor located. It looks too good to carve up though. I might just swap cabs.

I would just swap the cabs, I think it would be a lot easier to do that.

The pic I posted looks like there is rust above the windshield and passenger door, but it's just glue from the headliner. There's no rust on the inside. I'll probably end up swapping cabs or more likely, I'll just keep driving it. This truck sees a lot of brush, dirt roads, and farm duty, so I'm not going to try to make it a show truck. Maybe I'll start fresh with a different truck.

#1 reason I hate those stupid ass visors #2 is they are ugly as hell.

Visor is coming off. It also makes it hard to see a traffic light if you're the first in line.
