Ball Joint Covers...Inside & through hole????
Hi,
question about ball joints....do I push the grease cover through the hole and then press the ball joint into the hole (and risk cutting the grease cover as I did already)?? Or do I take the cover off, press the 'naked' ball joint into the hole, then push the grease cover on the shaft and the spindle holds the grease cover in place??? THANKS!!!!

Naked ball joint is inserted first. The cover goes on afterwards!
LOL, I've never seen anyone do that before! |

Re: Ball Joint Covers...Inside & through hole????
The upper ball joints would be the same way then too?
I never have replaced any before so I didn't know. Is it worth it to get the more expensive 'name brand' ball joints or are jobbers okay?

Re: Ball Joint Covers...Inside & through hole????
The top goes on the same way. I think it may actually have room to go with the boot on. The top joint is bolted to the arm. The lower one is pressed in.
I like using Moog ball joints. Last edited by gchemist; 12-12-2010 at 12:25 AM. |

Re: Ball Joint Covers...Inside & through hole????
we bought the cheapest ones they had listed at rockauto. We also used cheapies from autozone years ago on a 76 no issues. The top has enough room to put the boot on and slide it in place, but you can stick it on after it's in the arm.

Re: Ball Joint Covers...Inside & through hole????
I know the ball joints are greased when I bought them, but do I add more grease before I put on the spindles Or after or do I not need to add more grease?

Re: Ball Joint Covers...Inside & through hole????
I'd wait until everything is back together then grease them, DEFINATELY ADD MORE GREASE! They only have enough on them to keep out rust it seems like. I'd grease them until you start to feel the rubber boot/cover swell then stop. We just did a whole front end on the 84 back in No.v and greased everything after it was done.

Re: Ball Joint Covers...Inside & through hole????
I should have read the instructions in the Haynes manual to begin with...
