Is it ok to put a Snowplow on a 2wd 1 Ton Truck?

I have a restored 1984 GMC Sierra 3500 - 350 engine with automatic tranny- and i want to put a plow on it bc Im getting sick of cleaning a long driveway with my little snowblower. Driveway is 8 feet wide.

My truck is a 2wd and it is not posi. I did put Nokia Hakkapeliitta LTs winter/snowtires on the rear of the truck. These tires are suppose to be the best that money can but in a winter/snow tire. U can put studs in them but i didnt. They are also siped.

Do u think its okay to put a plow on this truck so i can plow my driveway and maybe a few around the neighborhood to make a little extra money?

Are there many 2wd trucks that have Snowplows on them?

Man that thing is toooo nice to plow with!

Nothing technicaly is stopping you. But it may not work to well. I guess it might depend on how much snow you have to plow. At some point, your rear end will loose traction way before a 4wd would loose traction.

probably not a good Idea...your going to need a ton of weight to make up for the weight of the plow ( it kinda lifts the back because of the weight being in front of the wheels)

I would recomend buying a POS truck with a plow on it already ( read rust bucket) and be done (even a little s 10 or ranger.4x4...) it will do your driveway just fine and and when a snow ball ( read a ice ball) rolls back against the door you won't be in a tizzy

small driveway.....buy a snow blower. Installing a plow is a lot of work for such a small drive....pumps, hoses, switchgear, etc. a real pain unless you've got a good sized yard to do (or take on the neighbors for profit) often

I just give the neighbor kid $10, then again I got a pretty short drive and it snows here like twice a year at most.
Won't be long till my kid will be old enough to take on the task.

Short story, no way would I think of putting a plow on that purty truck.

Re: Is it ok to put a Snowplow on a 2wd 1 Ton Truck?

You really don't want to put a snowplow on that...it's too nice to tear up.

Maybe... if it was just for your own drive, maybe. But for what you'll have vested in a plow set-up consider finding a decent used garden tractor with a hydraulic plow or snowblower, weights and chains. Maybe even with a cab. (thinking an older John Deere 300 or 400 series would work)

Seriously, that is too nice a truck to tear it up with a plow, salt and...just trust one with experience, snow plows are hard on any truck no matter how careful the operator.

You could also toss around the idea of putting a plow on a four wheeler or a Mule or Gator.

thats too nice to plow with! even if it was a 4x4...... not a good idea with a 2wd. a heavy front end, with no weight in the back, you wont be able to push anything you'll just spin out.

Re: Is it ok to put a Snowplow on a 2wd 1 Ton Truck?

Here`s my 1 ton w/plow, of couse it is 4WD. I have seen several 2WD plow trucks, but most were dualie w/ flatbeds and usually a sander or something for weight. I agree your truck looks to clean to plow with. You should be able to find another truck or Blazer local for pretty cheap to do what you need. I just saw an 86 K20 on CL in NY w/an 8 ft Fisher for $1000 today.

Steering is usually the problem, with out the traction of the front wheels, the plow will have a tendancy to push the truck....rather than the other way around.

Re: Is it ok to put a Snowplow on a 2wd 1 Ton Truck?

One of the places I used to work had it's own plow truck for doing the parking lot('79 F-150 5L 4x4) and we'd all fight to run the plow on weekends when the guy that looked after doin' it during the week was off. I can say you definitely notice a difference in 2wd when you start to try to plow a few inches of snow off the lot and the last guy that went to gas the truck up forgot to throw the truck back in 4Hi when it was parked.

Unless you've got some serious weight in your box like str8axle55 stated, like a loaded up sander, you're going to be spinning your wheels and ending up really frustrated. The weight on your front end(even with a 1 ton truck) from the bracketry, blade, hydraulic gear(pump, piston, etc.) and often a secondary battery will compromise your Rwd truck's traction and you'll spend more time spinning your nice new snow tires than you will pushing snow. Not to mention the severe wear and tear on your chassis, suspension and steering, regardless of how carefully you use the plow.

You'd be better served either looking for a beater 4x4 with a plow and hydraulics already installed if you have to have one that bad or buy a 10 horse self propelled blower.

Re: Is it ok to put a Snowplow on a 2wd 1 Ton Truck?

Looked on Craigslist and theres quite a few trucks with plows. Only problem is that I really don't have room for another vehicle. Kinda feel like buying a cheap truck with a plow for the winter and then selling it but we all know the problem with that is making sure that the plow is good and that the truck is mechanically sound. Im going to consider the other options offered here such as a better snowblower - I currently have a 1999 MTD Yard Machines 26 inch which isnt bad but its not really Heavy Duty.

Didnt really know that putting a plow on my truck could do more damage than its worth and i spent alot of $$$$ restoring my dad's original truck.

Thank u for caring for my investment!

Re: Is it ok to put a Snowplow on a 2wd 1 Ton Truck?

I sold my Honda snowblower last season, and bought my K30 for what I sold the Honda for. The truck has paid for itself, and them some hauling scrap from my work. If you have the space for another square, you could maybe find a way to make some $$ with it.

Re: Is it ok to put a Snowplow on a 2wd 1 Ton Truck?

I have chains on an old murray riding mower (got for free, but built engine) with an old ATV blade(free) I hooked up. Took a little fabricating but I plow my drive, shop area and gravel out to the county rd with it. It takes a little while but it didn't cost much.
