brake upgrades for 3/4t napco front axle

ive had a couple 61 chevy k20s in the past,and have an extra front axle left over that i was thinking about grafting under my 56 3/4t.
my biggest issue with the older 4x4s was lack of really good brakes even with all new parts.
has anybody figured out better brakes for these old axles?
from what i remember its basically a dana 44 axle,but if i go this route i want to keep the drum brakes so it still looks like an origional 4x4
