Can we talk about converting 4wd to 2wd?

Can we talk about converting 4wd to 2wd?

I have a few questions is it possible to do with keeping a solid front axle?

do hey make drop leaf springs? or would I be better off flipping the spring perches around?

also what should i do with the axle keep the housing emspty and remove the axle shafts?

I know if anyone can lead me in the right direction it will be you guys

Re: Can we talk about converting 4wd to 2wd?

I'm not sure I understand... Why would you want to turn a 4x4 into a 2wd? If it's for gas mileage, I don't know that it would help if you already have hubs that can be unlocked. If it is for looks, I'm sure you could find plenty 'o people that would gladly trade their 2wd for a 4wd, given similar condition, etc. I guess it CAN be done, just like I can get a tattoo of Liberace on my back. But just because you CAN do something doesn't necessarily mean you should.

But then again, I do like 2wd's more than 4wd's...

Re: Can we talk about converting 4wd to 2wd?

I have been trying to get people to swap and trade and I have also tried selling ti for a 2wd but it's not happening so the only thing left is 4wd to 2wd

Re: Can we talk about converting 4wd to 2wd?

go find a 73-87 C10 and take the front crossmember and all parts attatched to bolt into your frame.... its been done and usually only requires drilling a few holes to bolt in....

If you want to keep the front you have, you could put the springs UNDER the axle tube. that would lower the front. Yes, take all the axles and locking hubs out. less rotating mass/resisitance.... but you're stuck with 6 lug and huge hub bore....

Re: Can we talk about converting 4wd to 2wd?

You really can't lower a straight axle 4x4 to the point of it looking like a 2 wheel drive. The axle housing will hit the oil pan, no way around it.

If you really have your mind set on the conversion, you need the entire front crossmember from a 2 wheel drive truck. It's pretty much a bolt-in thing, but it would be a lot easier if you pulled the engine out first. It shouldn't be that big of a deal since you have to swap transmissions anyway to get rid of the transfer case.

I have a 2wd 3/4 roller with leafs and a D60 here in MN. I'd definitely swap rolling chassis if I was closer...damn! This condition vehicle is all you need below... I bet you can find a decent 2wd rolling chassis in a junk yard somewhere for about what you will earn selling your 4wd parts and those dished out turbines . Good luck!
