Yahhhh Hoooo.

I'm as tickled as you probably are. I feel like I just fixed my truck. Don't worry about a ribbing. It ain't going to happen. We've all done it.

I'm just glad you have probably found the problem. Well, for sure it's what it is. No doubt. I sure was dreading you posting on here about how it looked falling off the cliff.

just a reminder.....

Quote:
1) So that rules out distributor 180 out or timing chain not installed correctly.

2) The timing set is still new and tight and I KNOW I put the crank key on "0".. I specifically remember doing this and Im 110% sure that I have it on right.

3) Even though im "110%" sure about the timing set,

4) it DOES sound valve timing related but Im pretty sure it aint!

5-25) [same things said to several mechanics]

Been there, done that. I did pretty much the same thing, just a smaller motor. Put together a 2300cc Pinto motor when I was a kid. I knew "exactly" how to set the gears for the timing belt. I also "knew" I had done it right.

The wierd part is, it would start and run. Give it gas, and it bogged and died. I restabbed that distrubitor 19 times before I went back and looked at the timing gears.

And just to rub salt in my wound, after I figured it out, and got it all right again, my brand new timing belt broke. I had to take it apart one more time....:p

I heard that....I can't tell you how many times being 110% sure has cost me hours of unbillable labor.....it happens to the best of us. Now you can look forward to slapping it all back together and letting her rip....

Its all a little plot by Comp Cams I swear to you lol. You would think they could make it just a little easier to mark than the way they mark them like that. It was real fun the first time trying to guess where I should set the crank gear to the cam gear. But I did finally get it.

How's it coming??? I'm curious...

The thought of this thread made me cringe last night... I have finally had the time to get my motor installed. Last night was the big night, going to finally start her up... UH OH!!!! It wouldn't start ..... By this time it was after 10pm so I just let it sit until tonight...while I wondered about it all night...Well, it turned out that the dist was 180 out...Boy did I feel like a dumb@$$.... Evedently I was in to big a hurry and was using the tissue paper trick but my a/c bracket and headers kept me from getting it in the hole good and the slight puff on the exhaust stroke blew it out.....Yes, it was a simple fix. I felt like an idiot, but I couldn't get your problem out of my head....Anyway, with the dist stabbed CORRECTLY she busted right off. No I just have to fix the issues with the TV cable bracket....FYI, the edelbrock bracket doesn't work worth a dam with the stock tv cable. You can't get the right angle and it's too far away....

Anyway, I'm anxious to hear how it coming along.....

=) great to hear that you got your engine going! I tried to fire mine up the other day, she did, but she was coughing like no body's business and soon died after giving her some gas. So yeah, I wore out two batteries trying to get her started when I finally decided to look at my gauges. Guess what? No gas. LOL I grabbed the Jerry can and poured a good 20 litres in, and wore out my last battery trying to get it started, no go. So much for that little head smack, it still wasn't good! So yeah, I got frusterated, kicked the tire and came in, call my father, tell him the situation and go and sit down here to check the forums. About an hour later I just hear this HUGE roar, and thought to myself, wow, nice sounding truck! A few minutes later my father walks in grinning ear to ear, "Jeese Russ! Your truck sounds like my old camaro when you give it some gas!" I kinda look at him, then run outside, sure enough, my truck is sitting there just purring, I look at my dad, he just grins and tells me why it died and was running so bad in the first place, old gas. Thats why there was all sorts of funky smelling blue smoke coming out of it, just old gas. He said that I flooded it when I put in the new gas and tried to start it up, and that it fired up right away after he sat down in it and turned the key

I was quite happy, and it has been running great since! Hopefully I can get it insured within a couple of days! Just gotta check out the rear drums and clean them out a bit, the one had a broken brake line and is covered with brake fluid so it just grabs right away and locks up the brake, after it is back on four wheels, we gotta add one more clamp onto the exhuast system (new muffler sounds awesome, the engine issues happened before I bough the new muffler. Just an O.E.M but it sounds a heck of a lot better than what I had on there before) and I can get it insured. My windsheild wiper needs to be changed out though, it is old and about to quit. I am so exited to be able to drive it on the road for once! I think I am gonna fill up the tank and just go drivin with no destination in partiuclar

allthrtl; its coming good.. I got her all buttoned up and she fired right up.. it was sweet, just about 2 seconds worth of stumble then it PURRED.. extremely responsive throttle too, even w/o a choke..

that was last nite.. so today after work I got it all back together, air cleaner, hood, etc then took her for a drive.. runs XLNT. No problems what so ever except that my trans is leaking like a sivve. Not sure why, I think one of the cooler lines must have come loose. That, or the dipstick tube is F'd. That thing never did seal very well.. Oh well, wont be long before a 700r4 and new dipstick take its place. P.O.S.!

Russell; good story.. aint it a b!tch when dad is right? I always thought so

Not trying to hijack the post or anything but while we are on the topic of stupid mistakes, When I installed my new motor a few months ago it fired right up. The first time. At about 5000 rpm. Needless to say I shut it down instantaneously. Then I remembered that when I had pulled it before the rebuild I had forgot to unhook the throttle cable. The throttle had gotten stuck wide open. The carb was new so I knew it had no problems and just bolted it right on. This was of course the last thing I had done and it was late at night and out in the barn yard etc. (be thankful all you guys with garages) and I had not noticed that the throttle was stuck open when I re-attached the cable. It has been about 5000 miles now and she runs great but I am still keeping my fingers crossed.

Glad you figured it out as well, Mike. Best of the luck with the new motor.
