Got the same problem...

Hi MSL ,
got the same problem a few weeks ago , the alt loaded nicely , but the battery ( although 12,98 V on the voltmeter ) wouldn't crank the engine like it should do & the battery was emptied in a few seconds.
When the battery was put in // with another one , problem solved.
I checked all the wires , it was the big red one from the battery to the starter which was loose at the starter , the nut had to be tightened back , problem solved...
Maybe it is not that , take a look , you never know

have your battery tested, i had a similar problem with my 82. it would run fine, and started great from dead cold. once it got warmed up, it wouldnt refire until it cooled down. turns out that i had a dead cell.

If your battery tests out ok its the starter solenoid

if your connections are tight and clean and your battery is good.... if it clicks whe you turn the key to the on position right before it cranks over...then your solenoid is fine and your starter is bad ... mine did something simiiar and i fix the problem by changin the starter out .... check the easy and cheap stuff first

good luck
