Are Chevy 3 speed and 4 speed bell housings the same?

I know for sure they are on a 305 V-6 becasue I had a SM-320 (3 sp) and upgraded to an SM -420 (4 sp). Each had 4 main bolt holes that hold the Trans against the housing. I can't speak for others.

I'm looking to swap out a 3 speed on the tree for a saginaw 4 speed and merry it to a sbc

The bellhousing that originally came with my '63 (230, 3spd) is currently in use with my 327 and M-21 4 speed, if that helps.

yes the are the same, unless you find a bell that is designed for a 12 inch clutch,[think big truck] then the center hole is slightly bigger.
