Newbie questions

Hi all -
Just picked up a '67 GMC longwheelbase. I think it is all original....the numbers on the engine and tranny match what is in the glovebox. It has the 305E with the 3 speed. I've been plinking around trying to find a good resource to decode VIN and paintcodes to make sure that everything is copacetic but can't find the info. VIN is CM1590DCxxxxA, paint code is 557AA.

Does anyone have the info for this or point me to the right place?

Also, is there a contact at GM where I can order the original build info? Any other nobrainer resources I should know?

There were special orders also. Some will be listed under the DSO
box on the glovebox data sheet. (Dealer Supplied Opton)

There is quite a bit of data on this subject in the board archives but for the time being the search option is disabled.
When it becomes available again give it a try.

One other question. Is there a "Bible" restoration for these trucks? There are a couple of minor items that I'll need to restore to original (like the black painted trim on the chrome grill) and I'd like to see how it originally looked.

GMCPaul (aka Paul Robbins) would be you GMC Bible. Not sure what printed material there is though. He is a hard man to contact and is at The Carlisle PA show through the weekend. Go to www.gmcpauls.com for contact info.

As for your grille, I don't think the correct 67 grille had any black accents on it except for the lettering (maybe this is what you are referring to). The 71/72 grille certainly did, maybe someone swapped? The 67 grill is a one-year-only item and should have GMC stamped in the center and your hood should be void of emblems/lettering.

Couple of problems...

thanks again for all the kind words...

After driving the truck for a couple of days, I've found two problems:

1) the old Stromburg carb doesn't seem to hold any fuel in it's bowl overnight. It will start on the first try all day long but once it sits overnight I've got to pump the pedal about 30 times to get any fuel to it. Looks like someone has installed a checkvalve in the fuel line between the pump and the carb to keep gas from draining out, but it still does overnight. Any thoughts?

2) Sometimes it is very difficult to get the 3-speed tranny in reverse, and yesterday I had a hard time getting it into first, too. I can usually fiddle around with putting it in neutral, then another gear, then nursing it into reverse but occasionaly I have to turn off the engine, put it in reverse, then restart it. I't isn't binding, just grinding the gears. I know reverse isn't synchro, but it shouldn't be THAT tough. The other gears are fine and the clutch seems fine...no creep, no slippage. It has the factory HD clutch, I think.

Let me know any ideas.....

Sounds like your clutch isn't disengaging completely. Or you aren't pushing the pedal far enough down. If it's a new clutch, try readjusting it so it will disengage with the pedal closer to the top.
