Steel crank 327??
Looking at 68 LWB GMC tomorrow, wants me to make an offer.
AC cab 327 Tires are rotted off, hasn't been ran i a few years His uncle bought it new... says the rust is not bubbled up and only the rockers are in really bad condition in his add. I haven't asked any questions yet, figure I will wait til I see it in person. He thinks that the 327 with a steel crank is rare. I don't know anything about this. Is there something I don't know? I am so anxious to have one of these trucks I am afraid that I am going to over pay. I am thinking of offering $500 and going from there.  [IMG] [/IMG]

I wouldn't say the crank is real rare. I guess it's a fairly rare 327 crank. '68 was the last 327 truck motor and they were large journal (like 350s) with steel crank. I have one from a '68 Chevy truck. I assume this one will be the same casting. I don't recall the numbers but I ran mine down and its the same block as the '68 Camaro SS350 (350hp) and '68 Z/28. In my mind they are very desirable engines. They were rated @250hp.

like specialk already stated, there are large journals, and small journals. as far as i see it, all the small jornals are is a PITA to find another crank for. believe me, i have one sitting outside in a crate.

An LJ 327 crank is pretty rare in a 2wd pickup....I have heard of guys pulling them from a 4wd, or BIG truck, but they were most common in muscle cars from the era. crazyL

All small journal 327 cranks were steel. A large journal steel 327 crank is pretty hard to find. I parted a 68 1/2 ton once upon a time, and it was a steel crank. You won't know if it's steel untill you pull the pan.

500 looks about right. The grill looks like it is in good condition and it is probalby worth about 1/2 that.
I just rebuilt my 327 and it was a large journal 69 out of a camaro. Good luck.

If you have a good eye and a flash light, and you can get under the engine and trans. Sometimes you can look up at where the crank meets the fly wheel, and if you see a wide cast ridge it's a steel crank. If it is a narrow cast ridge it is a cast iron crank.
Steel cranks, and 4 bolt main blocks are of no concern if you are just building a truck motor or even a hot little street thumper IMO.

The first small blocks were small journal and smaller displacement(265,283,327). GM bumped the displacement up and went to a larger journal from that day on. All 305,307,350,400s,and the last 327s are large journal. I know in trucks the change occurred in '68 and,as far as I've seen,all these last 327/first large journals were steel cranks.
They say "steel" crank for forged steel which is stronger than the more common cast steel. I always said "forged crank",but the majority won out and I say steel now.
