Emergency brake cable options
I've got a 72 LWB and I'm running the stock drum setup on the rear. I'm trying to find some options for the emergency brake cable (s). Anybody have any suggestions or ideas?
I'm not a big fan of the cable and routing under the truck or the cable styles for the rear (black or spiral steel) and I'm having no luck finding steel braided rears. Even if I do find them, I'm not sure how they will look. I'd really like something I could paint or powder coat so it kind of "goes away". Note the cable retainer bracket is still on the trailing arm so I need to use that somehow as well. |

Re: Emergency brake cable options
I have a 4x4 72 work truck that we put an inline brake lock on. It is a simple cut off just like you would use on a water line, gas line, etc. We put it inline with the tubing going to the oil meter. You just push the brake pedal as hard as you can and reach under the dash, pull the handle, and you have locked brakes.
The only problem is when someone not familiar to the set up tries to drive the truck!

Re: Emergency brake cable options
My other advice is........if it is an automatic transmission, why have an emergency brake. I never use mine on the 2 wheel drive truck with autos.

Re: Emergency brake cable options
You could always go with a small disc brake on the tranny output shaft. I know a bunch of guys that have them on their rockcrawlers... but they are usually Toyotas.

Re: Emergency brake cable options
What about a later model setup (2 into 1) that uses enclosed cables that you can run inside the frame rails? I'm assuming you want to get rid of the "dangling" open stock cables.....
BTW, like those wheels.... Last edited by 5150.4.67; 01-20-2011 at 02:51 AM. |

Re: Emergency brake cable options
Thanks guys, all good suggestions but part of my problem is the "tab" on the trailing arm. I don't want to leave it there if it's not used, and I don't want to remove it now because I'd have to re-coat the trailing arms.
5150, you're right, I hate the factory cabling, mostly the open "dangling" part. Something later model may work but I'm not real sure where to start looking. I have thought about covering the rears with some braided nylon sleeving to "doll" them up a little but then I still have the bare front part to deal with. I may be able to do something similar with it too, depending on how close my exhause is, and the materials used. |
