Chevy Tuned Port Injection on a 283

Ok, I've been thinking about dropping chevy's tuned port injection on the 283 sitting in my 65. I've done a lot of reading up on it and I understand that while it maximizes the torque you get out of a 305 or 350 they tend to drop off big time past 5 grand. One of the things I love about my 283 is that it pulls strong clear to 6 grand, the down side is its a bit weak below 2500 - 3000. I currently have stock heads and reground RV cam. I am thinking of dropping on a set of Trickflow Super 23® 175, Aluminum, Assembled, 56cc Chamber heads with a CompCams 268 Fuel Injection friendly rollor cam.

So here is my question, do any of you have enough experience with Chevy's TPI to tell me if the 283 is small enough that the the TPI's runners won't choke it off over 5000 rpms or is it just the design of the TPI and the size of the engine makes no difference...

I currently am running a Edelbrock 1405 and performer intake, which with my RV cam and small valve heads gives me a engine weak below 3k and screamer above to 6k..

its pretty much the design of the tpi . the flow can be increased effectively as well as the rpm range with big tube runners and base edelbrock and bbk make these and with a custom chip can get you into the 6500-6800 rpm range

Re: Chevy Tuned Port Injection on a 283

The TPI from the factory was designed for emissions compatability. If memory serves me the 350 tpi's had larger runners than the 305's did. I would find a 350 TPI off of a Vette (verify verify verify) if you can and I think you will get the flow you're looking for.
I have thought several times about using the whole topend off of a early 90's Vette with the roller cam and aluminum 58cc cylinder heads on a 283, I think it would be a screamer, over active brain sometimes I think...

Re: Chevy Tuned Port Injection on a 283

the only difference in the 305 vs 350 tpis is the injector size 305=19lb hr and 350=21lb hr the plenum and runners are identical, corvette was only slightly different the fuel inlet and return are on the right side of the fuel rail while all others were on the left side. in my first post i forgot to mention the BBK 58mm throttle body for added air flow also.as for the best unit for intended purposes the 82-86 were mass air flow sensing and are more forgivable on engine mods, cams, heads, and displacement the 87-92 were speed density using a map sensor and are pretty picky about ANY mods to the engine...hope this helps
