Just finished putting the last of three coats of teak oil on the red oak hopefully this weekend I can start the first of three coats of spar for the finish.

I am using Watco teak oil and General Paint spar varnish which is used for marine and other applications.
The first two coats of teak oil were mixed with thinners ( 10% thinner 90% teak oil ) and the last one was straight teak oil.
I used 320 grit and sanded between coats.
The next three coats will be spar varnish and sanding with 320 between coats.
I will post some pics when I am done hopefully by mid next week.

are there different shades of teak oil you can use for a darker stain if one wanted to? im about to make my own custom bed wood also. And, is varnish basically the same thing as lacquer? the name teak oil doesnt sound as if it preps the wood for proper adhesion of somthing like this. please explain this to me. and also perhaps why you decided to use this combo of sealers/preserves

Darkone - I am by no means an expert on this subject but by talking to different people and the internet this is what I came up with. As for different shades of teak oil I am not sure. varnish and lacquer are similiar but there are a few differences - lacquers come in clear & coloured, varnishes tend to be clear, the plasticizers in lacquer give it a more hard wearing finish than varnish.
As for the teak oil I used this as it penetrates deep into the wood pores and has good uv & moisture resistant properties and it is used often in marine enviroments above the water line. It also brings the grain pattern out in the wood. I wanted to protect the wood from the inside out and the spar will act as the exterior finish. I hope this helps but I am sure there are more qualified people on this matter other than me.
