Burning question of the day: Years GMC produced their "Longhorn

Something I've always wondered. When did GMC start producing their version of the Longhorn? We know Chevy Longhorns were produced from Mid '68 through '72. Is there such a thing as a 68 GMC "Longhorn"?

There really aren't many of the GMC "Longhorns" around as far as I've seen. But they do exist. The only one I remember seeing on this site was a guy from Hawaii.

As far as I recall, GMC Longhorns were not badged Longhorns. They were just extended LWB wide bed trucks.

I am not sure when GMC longhorns came out. They did have the same modle # as the chevys, but not the badges because alot of the trucks got the Sierra and Grande emblems at that location. I wonder is the base GMC longhorns got the badges?

I have what's left of one in my posession. It was a 402BB truck that a fella in Arizona was parting out back in March of last year. The bed had the Sierra Grande emblems where the Longhorn emblems normally are. It does have a fiberglass shell on it which I think might be rare for the Longhorn models. You can see in the picture just behind my arm where the emblem was. The PO had siliconed them to the bedside because the pegs were broken off.

lol... I have yet to see proof of a 68 GMC 133 fleet, but I have seen a few 69 through 72. I hesitste to say there were no 68's though, just due to the low production numbers of the 68 models (intoroduced in march on the chevy line) and the lower number of GMC trucks.
The GMC models were never called Longhorns, but they did get the name custom camper. This frequently gets messed up becouse there was also an option package by the same name. The GMC badging was on the door, above the handle. The option package was nothing more than HD shocks, tires Heavy springs or overload springs, and a sway bar. The custom camper model was the same as chevy's longhorn, with the 8 1/2 foot bed on a one ton 133 inch wheelbase frame, 6 inches added to the front of the bed, and wooden bed floor.

I have another somewhat related question. How would a GMC Custom Camper with the Custom Camper package be badged? I have a GMC fender badge that says Custom Camper 3500 and I wonder if it was a 133" Wideside with Custom Camper badge. I know Chevy had the fender badge as a separate option from the actual package. Did GMC? On Chevys you could have a Cheyenne/20 with fender badges and Custom Camper door script or with badge option it would have Custom Camper/20 badges and no Cheyenne emblems. Has anyone seen a 133" Wideside (Custom Camper) with Custom Camer fender badges or did they have the typical Custom,Super Custom,Sierra,Sierra Grande badges and door script?

Tim, you pose a good question. I can only make an assumption on this... the Custom Camper 3500 badge you describe is probly for the option package, I have seen many GMC fender badges that have the trim level/option package written in the red block piece.
However, i can not confirm that in any way shape or form, it is just an assumption

As if this wasn't confusing enough, in '67 GMC called the option package (springs, stabilizer, 4spd or auto, hd cooling, wheels/tires) Camper Cruiser. I just read that in my 67 brochure.
