Having a 700R4 in my 71 is the best of both worlds, more base line torque and better gas mileage at top end. As for shift indicator. with 4 gears, D is overdrive,2 is 3rd, 1 is 2nd and 1st is further down on the column shift, besides how many ever use 1st.

71 custom deluxe, 350, 700R4, 3.42 12 bolt posi, edelbrock performer carb & intake, flowtech headers with 2 1/2 aluminized dual exhaust. Oak bed, Tach dash with am-fm.
