My 06 Silverado has started a rattle - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

Some where up front .. maybe in the steering ,,maybe something loose under the hood,, sounds like something loose and rattles from bumps ..

Are there any things from this year that is a known rattle problem ..

Might have to take it in to a dealer as my shop is full of 72 truck and it's raining day and night here in Oregon..

just thought I would ask.. gp

My Dad has an 06 Sierra, and had a similar problem. The local garage did something to it (can't remember what it was) and it seemed to stop for a little while. But the noise came back, and one day I checked his air filter and noticed that the heat sheild on the exhaust manifold had come off- it rotted off around the bolts. I took it out and the front end noise was gone.

More then likely yours is a different problem, but you might as well pop the hood and check.

Sounds like it could be the intermediate steering shaft. They (GM) had some issues with these in that body style. They had a grease kit for them that hid the problem for a while and I believe they have something else to possibly solve the problem. It will make noise on bumps and when you make turns. Also check the front shock mounts as I have seen some come loose and rattle.

This is the shaft that Maxxd07 mentioned. Like was stated before the GM kit only lubed the problem, didn't fix it. They do have a "revised" shaft that supposedly fixed it, cost is around $125. Dorman Products sells a "fixed" version also, that in the link at the begining.

I agree with the others. Here is a great thread with some tricks to try before replacing the shaft. I did it on mine, and it solved my knocking problem.

its the shaft.... BUT if you want to verify. remove the bolt under the hood betweed the upper shaft and lower shaft and stroke the upper I-shaft in and out about 5 times. Reassemble. It will stop rattling for about 15k miles.
