Antifreeze in oil?

Over the last month when I check my oil, I've been noticing some light gray slimy stuff on the dipstick, also about a month ago I changed out my thermostat, and since then there's been a small leak around there, you can see a small puddle of antifreeze on the intake manifold every now and then. So I just got to thinking, could antifreeze be getting into the oil and that account for the gray slime on the dipstick?

Re: Antifreeze in oil?

Yes and I wouldnt drive it much if at all, the antifreeze will ruin your oil and hinder what it is there for. I would fix the thermo housing and then change oil, run for a little bit and change the oil again.

Re: Antifreeze in oil?

More than likely the gray slime is just condensation. Here is South Dakota we get that for a solid for four or five months when it's really cold. In Texas it probably rarely gets cold enough to see it, so that's why it's alarming to you.

Now if all of the oil on the dipstick is the gray stuff, you have a problem. If you are worried just drain the oil. If the oil looks normal it's probably just condensation.

Re: Antifreeze in oil?

When you get antifreeze in the oil it will most likely start smoking white and smell like burning antifreeze.

Re: Antifreeze in oil?

a leaking intake manifold gasket will also allow water to get in the oil ...

Re: Antifreeze in oil?

In miami I would think either a blown head gasket or a leaking intake manifold gasket...As already suggested drain the oil and see what it looks like..

That will happen when water/antifreeze gets into the cylinder... not the crankcase.

Re: Antifreeze in oil?

Wow thanks for the help y'all, not sure if it makes a difference but thought I'd mention, the oil on the dipstick was always clean, the slime was usually further up towards the top of the dipstick. I do plan on fixing the leak soon no matter what the slime is.

Your right I don't know what I was thinking, I bought a 96 gmc once with blown head gaskets and it was smoking like crazy because of the coolant getting into the cylinders and leaking intake gasket. I checked the oil and the engine was literally half full of coolant probably around a gallon of antifreeze mixed with oil. Rebuilt the heads, new head gaskets, and intake gaskets and it ran perfect. It was my first truck and I drove it for two years with no issues.

Re: Antifreeze in oil?

I take back what I said about the oil being clean, just checked it... it wasn't clean. Oh well anyway got a new gasket and thermostat (it wasn't running hot enough with the 180deg I put in last time) so tomorrow I'll get the leak fixed and changed the oil. If there are some problems with the other gaskets ie. intake and head, then hopefully it'll be ok till I can get my new motor swapped in. Thanks for the help y'all!

Re: Antifreeze in oil?

I've never known a thermostat gasket to let antifreeze into the crankcase. I think you have other issues.

Re: Antifreeze in oil?

The t-stat gasket leak is unrelated. It just started leaking because you didn't get it sealed well. That's external. It will be one of the problems already mentions and you should not drive it or you'll need main bearings, etc. Check for bubbling water in your radiator.
