1984 K10 manual trans probems
I've got a 1984 K10 6.2 diesel with a manual trans, 3spd+OD. The other day I shifted it and it won't come out of gear. It seems to be stuck in second. What is causing this? Would a throwout bearing going down cause this? It had a noise that would appear while idling in neutral but would go away when clutch was depressed.
How hard and $$$ is this to fix?

I had a throw out bearing go a couple of months ago. Similar symptons.
I'd set the parking brake and climb under the truck and try to engage/disengage the clutch with the clutch fork. Also check for a missing spring. Unfortunately, there's no real easy way to replace. Pull motor, or drop the transmission. I was able to bring my transfer case and Transmission down as a unit. Much easier to do it from the top instead of crawling around on the garage floor. Two things can happen
The end of your shift stick can get worn out and slip out of the track. Probably means you have detent problems too. You can pull the shifter out by pressing down on the circular sheet metal piece that is at the base of the shifter and turning it (Counter clockwise I think). You can look in there and see if the shaft onthe right is forward and you can move it back and then put the shifter back in. You will probably want to have the top of the tranny rebuilt if it does it again. the 2nd thing is you may have a bent fork that slipped off and now is holding the 2nd gear in. You can pull the top of the tranny off by putting it half way into reverse. (If you can get it into reverse) this is a lot more work as you have to put the floor mats up and remove the tranny tower cover from the floorboards. If you have a bent fork, or just worn out rails, you may want to get a new tranny. A noise that goes away when the clucth is depressed can mean the tranny is getting worn, as the tranny will stop turning when you push in the clutch. It can also mean a lot of other things too, like a worn carrier (the tube around the splined input shaft that the throwout bearing slides on.) Hope this helps Good luck
