75 Chevy 3/4 ton steering issues

Ok Monday morning I start my truck and let it warm up.....My wife hears what she says sounds like a belt winning... i go out after a few minutes and i smell burnt power steering fluid....Well seems my power steering pump is burned up....So today I buy a reman pump and new lines.....I install them put in new fluid and start truck....Get out of truck get under hood to check fluid and pump is hottttt...and i mean like really hot....It was only a matter of a minute from time I started truck to time i got under hood to check fluid and it got hot that quick....What could be wrong....Fluid didnt drop any at all either so it aint pumping fluid into steering gear box ( I am asumming) ....

when you put fluid in ,move the wheel left to right, but not all the way
this will bleed out the air,the pump might be empty

Re: 75 Chevy 3/4 ton steering issues

I checked the power steering pump for fluid...it is still full...and I tried to move the wheel left to right and its tight...i know it should be a little tight but this seems extremly tight as if the steering is locked...I have changed power steering pumps before and usually when u fire truck up it sucks fluid down but not this time..

Re: 75 Chevy 3/4 ton steering issues

Any time you replace a power steering pump you ALWAYS have to cycle it through to bleed the system. First, you plug the hole on the reservoir where the return line attaches to. There should be a plastic plug that comes with the pump when you buy it. Put the return line into a catch-can/pan/etc. to catch fluid. Fill up the pump, turn on the truck, move the steering wheel left to right, lock to lock. You'll have to do this several times and fill the reservoir accordingly until the steering is smooth, and until the power steering coming out of the return line flows clear into the catch-can/pan. This will get rid of the old, contaminated power steering fluid from the steering gear and will bleed the air out of the system. Then bolt up the return line into the pump reservoir and you're all set.

Re: 75 Chevy 3/4 ton steering issues

Ya i tried to bleed the system even though it was getting hot...but it was getting even hotter and was starting to boil the fluid and was barely even turning the wheels, even with tires jacked up off the ground...So I am going to just replace everything. So I know its all new...

Re: 75 Chevy 3/4 ton steering issues

By the way, doing what I just described will also show you if fluid is being pumped from the reservoir into the steering gear and back into the pump. Hope this helps.

If this doesn't work, you might have a bad steering gear.
