Starter issues

I have an autozone rebuilt starter that is grinding. I have tried it with shims and without still the same thing. After looking on here about cast iron nose cones I called a few salvage yards and found a 3 bolt starter. The starter that is in it now is the staggered bolt pattern. I got under and looked at the block and there are 3 holes on the bottom of the block. I have not seen the starter yet so will this work with an auto tranny? Any suggestions if I can't use this one would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for your help.

There is not a three bolt starter that bolts to the bottom of the bell housing. they are two bolts only one staggered and one straight across. They are for different diameter flex plates or flywheels. The old three bolt starters bolted to the front of the bell housing. Have you looked at the teeth on the flywheel to see if any are broken or missing. Also do you have the correct bolts for the starter.

Re: Starter issues

Was always told that starters either "bolted up" or they "bolted back". Those were the only options, and you had to have the right one.

Re: Starter issues

I have the correct bolts. I have not checked the fly wheel yet. Still light out I will go check.

Re: Starter issues

No teeth missing on half of the flywheel that I can see. Is there any way to tell how many teeth there are on it without rotating the engine?

Not really, does the starter you have engage at all or does it sound like it is spinning and the engine is not turning. You could possibly have a bad starter from Autozone. You could take it back and have them check it. Did this problem start when you bought this starter or was the old one doing it also.

Re: Starter issues

It will start but it does grind if it does not fire right away. The starter at the salvage yard has the cast iron nose cone on it.
