Diesel to gas conversion

I have 88 Burb with a 6.2 that is toast I want ed to toss in a 350 that I have laying around, what is needed to perform this conversion???

Are we talking TBI 350 or a Carbed 350? Carbed 350 would be easier.

Carbed 350 would just be simple wiring and the fuel pump would be mechanical like the 6.2. Adjust or modify fuel lines and purge the tank and the lines and you should be pretty good to go. Then theres the drive train to contend with...

If you wanted to go Fuel Injected then you have a bit more work.

The 6.2 is blown up, I have a 350 darn near ready to go in the garage, it is not a driver it is a toy lifted with 35's

I guess he might want something with more than 140 HP to move a lifted 'Burb with 35's.

I have never done the conversion personally, but I can't imagine it being too bad. You will need to pull the diesel fuel filters out of the loop, and clean out the tank really well. The trans in the truck will work just fine like it is, worst case you will need to swap out the TV cable and make sure you get a good bracket for it, to avout toasting the trans. The existing electrical should work, but make sure you run 12V to the distributor. I think the biggest hurdle you might find is is getting teh hydroboost P/S pump to swap. It seems like they are different from gas to diesel, so you might have to play with brackets a bit. Since people were putting gas engines in the old 5.7 diesels right and left, it shouldn't be too bad.

I have done this several times, but gone the opposite way. Take your diesel out and stick the gasser in it. If its a carbed motor, take the pink wire that goes to you fuel valve on the diesel, and stick it in the HEI dist. Everything else is pretty straight forward. If you want TBI, do the same thing, then get a tbi harness, ditch all of the emissions crap, hook the orange and black wire to a ground, then hook your pink/back wire to ignition hot, orange and red wires to battery hot, and ground it to the block and the body. Tan/white wire will go to your fuel pump. The orange and black wire that I said to ground will keep any emissions stuff from trying to come on, basically it will keep you from having a service engine light come on for emissions reasons. It just kind of tricks the computer.

If it was a newer Diesel I would say keep it, but the older ones are not as good as the new ones today and you can make a LS motor run just as good for not that much money..

an Ls engine would be a great swap but the funds will not allow it. Want one yes, afford one no.

This is true, I run a Banks kit on my setup. It used to be in a crewcab shortbed 1 ton 4x4 that I built. Its not bigblock power w/a turbo, but its everybit as stout as a very healthy beefed up small block. I junked out the crecab rig and the drivetrain is sitting in my '72 stepside 4x4. 6.5L, Banks turbo, NV4500/NP205 t-case, 1 ton chevy axles w/3.73s.

Plenty of power for SMOKIN tires, and hauling a trailer, along with better than 20MPG!

Now that is cool..

But you do have to put some money into the older ones to make them run like the new ones.

My point is, diesel has the power/torque as a gas and gets twice the mileage. I have an 84, an 83 and maintain my friends 88. All 6.2's All with 20+mpg.

tore in to this pig the other day found the problem, all the torque converter bolts had backed out, threw one through the inspection cover, and all flex plate bolts were sheared off. So I'm going to use the 327(it has trick flow heads twisted wedge heads) that I have for my 63 straight axle Chevy II, just going to swap the cam for a smaller one and use it. The Th 400 will get sent in for a rebuild and shift kit. I do not think you could pay me to keep a oil burner in this burb. This is a TOY used for mud runs and trail runs, the 6.2 is WAY to heavy and the "little" 327 will smoke it in the power department.

Thanks, not bad for a freebie!The cam that is in the 327 is a basic .480/.480" 230/230* cam WAY to big for a burb. I'll either get ti re ground or go buy a Comp. hi energy 268* cam (.454" lift and 218* duration). That should make it much better for the burb.

does anyone know much about the 6.2. i have a 83 and i dont know much about them and cant seem to find much except it was ones i guess the newer deisel has caused some seals to leak.

WTF. Mine did the same thing. Im going to try and replace the flywheel,And hope everything is ok. I drove mine like once a week as weather permitted then it just started making noises then is spit up one of the torque convertor bolts and dented some dudes car behind me on the freeway.

I always use red Loc Tite on torque converter bolts. Don't know if this is a common problem, but I just thought it would be a good idea.
