Fuel tank move - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I have read a lot of threads about folks that have removed the gas tank from the cab of the truck to the back which is what I want to do as well. I believe that I have it pretty much figured out except for a few questions that I am going to list below.

Truck info 1968 SWB Fleet. 350 engine pretty much stock.
1. As summing the gas door is on the drivers side by the side marker light where would the vent be run?
2. What about the hard lines from the tank to the pump?
3. Would a stock fuel pump be able to handle the job?

I think that is all for now but reserve the right to ask a lot more as I go

3. stock pump does it for the burbs.

1. vent it from the top of the gas tank, and just run a line pointing down
2. I just ran rubber fuel lines.
3.Yes manual fuel pump should work fine. A manual fuel pump will pull fuel a long ways. Electric pumps push fuel a long ways

Has anyone put a fuel tank from a newer truck in their 67-72? I was thinking of using one from an 05 crew cab. This puts the tank next to the drive shaft and does not require you to relocate the spare. If anyone has done this please post pics. Thanks

just running rubber fuel lines is a great way to burn up a truck

Buy steel fuel lines, there is a softer hand bendable version avalable if you don't wantto bend hard lines. I ran 3/8's but would have been fine to run 5/16. I vented thru a roll over check valve to a small K&N filter to keep dust and dirt out

Where a gas door would be is more dictated by if you have a long or shortbed. Search and research.

I agree steel lines. I believe the connection to the tank is on the pass side and was planning to run across the back and up the frame to the fuel pump.

What about the location. If I chose to install a filler door on the drivers side fender how would I go about building a sheet metal cage around the hoses?

I looked around and did a lot of research and finally decided to put the fill on the passenger side. It seems like that's gonna be easier to run the fill line and I don't have to worry about body work on the bedside. Just put the fill in the bed on the rear of the passenger side wheel well. Plus the pick up is now at the rear of the tank and fewer cross sill issues. Just my opinion FWIW. 71meangreenc10 has a nice setup

I like that setup, i can't stand my tank being inside of the cab either, i want to relocate it to the rear like you have it, do you have a part number for that fuel tank?

I used a CPP kit (300$) with the blazer tank and sending unit. Fits nice, I did have to notch the frame a bit, and I put in a electric fuel pump on my 67 fleetside.

It seems like that's gonna be easier to run the fill line and I don't have to worry about body work on the bedside. Just put the fill in the bed on the rear of the passenger side wheel well. Plus the pick up is now at the rear of the tank and fewer cross sill issues.
