Headers and starters
Ok, I am putting this thing back together, and I put headers on. How many of you with headers are using the standard size starter, and what problems, if any are you having? Anybody using a mini starter, and what if any problems are you having.

So far no problems with standard starter ( Knock on wood) with the Dynomax.

i'm using a hi-torque mini with hedman headers no problems in 2years and 35k miles

Im running Hooker super comps and you have to hold your mouth right to get starter off with the headers. I also have the starrter wrapped to keep heat off of it.

i'm running full length hedmans and the stock starter. i had problems with the heat until i installed a metal heat shield that i ordered from JC Whitney's. no problems since.

I have Hooker comps on the longhorn, & 1 tube is close to the starter case , but hasnt caused any problems......starts fine hot or cold(no heat sheild). crazyL

didnt see this post until after i made mine, but i think headers killed my starter today.... 3/4 length headers and regular starter

I went with a remote solinoid and it cured my hot start problems, I have pretty tight clearance with my hedman headers on the 69 4x4 so I later added a GM Delco Remy mini starter and can now remove and replace the starter without loosing the headers, plus it only weighs about 8 pounds compared to about 20 for a stock starter. This is the same starter that comes stock on the 502 crate motor.
I also replaced all battery cables with 2/0 welding cable and keep them as short as possible, its kind of overkill but most of the battery cable you buy at auto parts stores is to wimpy to carry a sufficent load.

My truck has had headers ever since I have owned
it. There were no problems with the first two engines (307 and 327). There was a heat problem with the 3rd engine (modified 350). I fabricated a shield from thin sheet metal and that solved the problem. The fourth engine is a stock 350. The shield is still there and there have been no problems. EdB |

I have full length Flowtech which are same as Dynomax and had a fullsize starter it was cooked in 1000 miles with a heat shield. I Got a Powermaster mini gear reduction starter and installed it and no problems. It cranks the engine quicker and has plenty of room between itself and the headers. It also draws less amps than a standard starter. Money well spent in my opinion. I had hot start problems bad til my other starter went out it is a unnecessary aggravation to say the least.

Thanks for all the replies. I guess that I can take a chance with the regular starter, or eliminate any problems by remoting the solenoid, or going with the mini starter. The cost of the mini is considerably more, but may be worth any headaches in the future.

Sorry, I meant to give you a couple of vendors in my last reply. Try speedwaymotors.com or yogisinc.com or any of the hotrod shops and or magazines, and both JEGS and Summit racing have them. I even did a search under google, for mini starters, and came up with several resources. Is the starter different for your BB? The cost of the minis is around $100-150 and upwards, and there are several vendors out there.

Delco perm magnet starter
The smaller starter that was pictured above is off a later model vehicle. If I remember correctly, they started using those starters in '95. So if you contact your local parts store and ask for a starter for a '95+ chevy truck w/ 350, they can hook you up. Be prepared for the price though. They run a pretty penny! I want to say it's a Delco # 323-423 but that doesn't look right... According to oreillyautoparts.com, it says it's a 323-485... $231.99!! Ouch! Hope this helps!

The small starter in the pic is what is on my 95 K1500. Stock GM, and a heck of an improvement from the larger, less efficient ones, IMO!!

I coudnt find the GM part number but the best place to purchase one is ebay, I paid about 100.00 for mine shipped, here's a link to one that comes with new starter bolts that you will need.
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...tem=2421688870 raggedjim, you can buy a kit from Summit or MAD Ind., I think a kit runs about 25 bucks, or you can just go to any parts store and buy a ford solinoid and wire it up yourself, I will try and find the wireing diagram I used. A real simple install.

no problem with the starter but i burn up solenoids about every 3 months
