Fan shroud

Ok I'm in the market for a new radiator and was wondering. Do I need a fan shroud with an electric fan or would I just be waisting money on it? The one I'm looking at is 400 with shroud and 16inch elc fan shipped. Without the shroud it about a 100 bucks cheaper. I'll still have to buy the wire/relay kit. What do you guys think any info would be great and have a great day...

Do you have a clutch fan on your motor now?

Yes but it is shot and my radiator has a hole in the top left of it. so I'm getting the 3 core aluminum rad to replace the old one. Also read I need the rad cap with some type of rod in it, so as to react with it and not the aluminum rad. The truck also had a 6 cyl now v8 and the fan sits a good distance from the rad and I don't have a factor shroud in it now.

Re: Fan shroud

The electric fans do work better if they are mounted to a shroud. This way they pull air across the entire radiator instead of just where the blades are.

It depends on the cooling capacity of the radiator and the cooling requirements of the engine. Displacement, compression ratios, cylinder wall thickness, carburation, new engine vs. broken in engine and how the vehicle will be used (hauling, towing, daily driver, occasional use, etc.) all effect the cooling requirements of the engine.

If it were me I would buy the shroud. I tend to default toward over capacity when it comes to the cooling system. I have (2) electric fan set-ups. One on a 375 HP SBC, the other on a 250 HP 5.0 HO Ford and both have full shrouds that pull the air across the entire radiator. But.......

A buddy of mine bought an early 50's Chevy truck with a LT1 out of a 1990's Trans AM. When he bought the car it didn't have any fan, belt driven or electric, and he drove it that way for about a year until he sold it. It never overheated. That being said he just drove it around town and to car shows. Never hauled anything in it or took it on long trips.

Point is, if the radiator has enough cooling capacity and the engine doesn't require much cooling capacity you probably won't need the shroud.

But, again, my advice would be to buy the shroud.
