papaws GTO
Well i dont have any pics bc of a house fire in the 80's but i was talking to my papaw today and i mentioned the GTO he had so he started goin on about it, which is what i wanted. then i got to thinking that it had to be a really rare car. It was a 66 GTO 389 Tri-power, turquoise blue as he described it, buckets and 4.11 posi. now heres the strange part.... he had to have them install a rear seat bc it didnt have one in it, had a 3 speed manual in the floor and he said it came with headers in the trunk??? he bought it off the show room floor in Savannah in Jan of 66. he said it was wicked fast. the end of the car came when my grandmother refused to twist around in the bucket seats to fool with my Dad and Uncle in the back, so it go traded in for a 68 Ford LTD wagon in late 67

Re: papaws GTO
My dad, grandpa, and uncle were into cars also. No Goats or stuff. They liked building. Wish I had the pictures still too. One I remember was the 4 Henry Js in my grandparents driveway. Two had built small block Chevys while the other two just hand hopped up 6s. Does seem like kids & hot rods tend to bring on station wagons The one I wish I could have restored was my dad's 56 Olds. Rust more than kids caused it's retirement for a Corvair Spyder.

Re: papaws GTO
Nice story. I have one for you. My dad used to have a 66 GTO he drag raced. It was a 389 tri-power 4 speed car when he started out. He built many 400's for it and blew many up. I used to buy parts from the same guy he bought his from in the late 60's up while dad was racing. His name was Larry Laveretty. Larry told me that my dad had the first after market anything Pontiac in Iowa first before anyone else had it. Needless to say the car was traded for another when my parents got married, and that car got traded for another. About 5 years ago I tracked the old GTO down but I was too late. The estate it was sitting on got foreclosed on and the bank scrapped everything sitting on the property. I pulled up as the scrap guy pulled the hull of the 66 out of the crusher. That figures that was the first car they crushed and I missed it. Oh well, the last car that he traded for he still had. I purchased it from him a few years ago when he got tired of looking at it and decided he'd never get to it. he was going to give it away and I told him I'd buy it before anyone else stole it. There is too much history in that car. My plan is to restore the car and give it back to him before he retires if it is possible.

Re: papaws GTO
my dad's GTO was not real rare, a 389 automatic car with a single 4 barrel, but he held on to it and gave it to me in 1982. i treasure it and still drive it occasionally, and will never part with it.
