Is there a secret way to prevent

The hood from bending in the middle? Mine hasn't but after looking through here I see allot that has.. Does these trucks need a softer spring?

Is there one available?

Keep grease on the hinges. The white lithium grease, comes in a rattle can is perfect. Give them a shot once a month.

Re: Is there a secret way to prevent

When you close the hood, PUSH BACK -NOT UP- first then pull down. This helps reduce the amount of downward force on the hinges to get them to close up. Now on the 81 and newer setups the hinges are way different and require less downward force to close them.

Re: Is there a secret way to prevent

I had the same problem, did some research and talked with a body friend of mine and he said the best thing was to get new hinges, I had used lithium grease on my old hinges and it helped a little bit but when I got my new hood I just ordered new hinges and springs from LMC truck...work like a charm now....you can use the hood stiffeners (in fact I bought them for my old hood before I bought a new one) they will start to work the kink out and keep it from doing that but if you have new hinges I don't think you need them as long as you keep them greased

Too little too late for my truck but everyone here as gave sound advice.

another thing you might consider is just...be gentle with them, instead of slamming them shut or throwing them open.

Re: Is there a secret way to prevent

They're supposed to bend where they typically do. They're made this way so they fold up in a frontal crash instead of pushing straight back and decapitating the driver and passenger.
I've tried a lot of stuff over the years to keep 'em freed up, you're almost always better off with new.

Re: Is there a secret way to prevent

New NOS hinges and Grease. I bought some aftermarket hinges before and they werent any tighter than the old sloppy OE stuff. They bend because of crappy hinges, and shutting the hood from off center. My truck (78) did'nt have a bent hood, neither did my 77 and my dad and grandad greased those hinges religiously.

I put NOS hinges on it, and keep em greased and now once you open the hood about 12 inches, it'll slam up the rest of the way on it's own if you don't stop it. And its real tight too. I can shut it with one finger. I grease it at oil change interval, and more if I'm opening and closing a lot because I'm working on something. All depends on how much I use it.

The NOS hinges are worth it strictly because the aftermarket versions aren't work anything, and ya gotta have something.

Grease it, Shut it in the center, Don't slam it (If you gotta slam it it needs adjustment), and the biggie: Don't let anybody else shut your hood for you, ever!
