Restored my console...

Big thanks to both hotrodhomi for the great deal on the console and Sharpie for the finishing touches!

It was in great shape to begin with (no cracks or holes), but dirty and blue with rust on the trim and ashtray. I cleaned her up with some tsp, and painted it a satin black. I used rustoleum...I know everyone says to use to a vinyl dye type of paint, but I went with rustoleum for ease of touch ups since I can go almost anywhere to get the paint again down the road if/when it sratches.

Just gotta build the box to go underneath it. I plan to build a short box with a sliding drawer for a little bit of a hidden storage. In the pictures its about 4" off the floor. At this hieght, I can sort of use it as an arm rest, but I lean over a little to the right.

Here's the pics:

PS...didn't realize I didn't have the cables for the lid...you got any of those Sharpie?

Re: Restored my console...

Thanks! I didn't notice how easy it is to see that I moved the driver's seat back a couple inches until I took these pics. I'm not a tall guy (5'10"), but I didn't like how close I was to the steering wheel with the seat in the stock location.

Looks nice. Did you rechrome the trim ring?

Re: Restored my console...

Nope! I got lucky...just cleaned it up with some fine steel wool and chrome polish. The picture doesn't show all the little imperfections as there's a little bit of pitting and scratches, but overall it's pretty darn nice. The same goes for the ashtray. It was covered in rust, and now it doesn't have any, but it's all swirled and the inside is still rusty...just like the trim though, I'm still stoked about the turn out!

Looks great!

How did you go about moving your seat back? I've often thought of filing just one more notch in the slider.

Re: Restored my console...

Thanks guys!

To move the seat back, the rear mounts were easy because there were already holes with nuts there for mounting the rear brackets. For the front, I cut down a piece of 4x4 box metal into an L bracket enough to where it bolted to the front location on the ridges, but the L part met the floor to keep it level. I then drilled some holes in it and bolted the seat bracket to it. Don't know if that makes sense so ill try to take some pics.

Re: Restored my console...

I told you it would clean up nice, great job. I didn't think about the cables. Mine doesn't have cables either.

Re: Restored my console...

You definitely weren't lying homi...this has to be my best purchase off the board yet.

I snapped a couple pics of the L bracket I was talking about for moving the seat back. Please excuse the mess...all I've been doing for the past few months is pulling the blazer in and out of the garage, so it needs a good cleaning.

If I could weld, I would weld the verticle part of the bracket to the floor, but for now it's just bolted in on the front stock location and the rear is resting on the floor.

Re: Restored my console...

Thanks for the pics and the explanation on moving the seat back. Well worth the effort if you ask me!

Re: Restored my console...

No problem! Like I said, I'm only 5'10", but pushing the seat back these 2-3 inches makes it perfect for me. My arm now rests comfortably on the door while holding the steering wheel.

Re: Restored my console...

Haha! I knew I was going to get some slack over that, it's pretty bad I'm surprised no one said anything about the mountain dew bottle in the console pic...

You didn't give me a chance, lol. I'm thinking about the extra inch or two myself for the seat nice.
