swap to drivers side drop xfer case and axle
Has anyone done the swap to a dodge or ford drivers side front differential? I got the 4x4 donor parts from a 95 Chevy and want to use the 95 tcase instead of the np205. The objective is to keep it simple and get the shift on the fly 4x4. This truck will be 50/50 on to off road. It would be basically the same as doing a 95 IFS to solid axle swap.
Thanks, Doug |

Re: swap to drivers side drop xfer case and axle
Are you going with the push button transfer case or the lever? The solid axle will restrict the shift on fly feature in that system. All 4wds are shift on fly with the hubs locked-in.I just lock them in when I`ll need 4wd off and on.Let us know more specifics.Maybe I`m misunderstanding you plan.

Re: swap to drivers side drop xfer case and axle
I have a 79' Ford dana 44 3/4 ton in my burb. I originally had the push button t-case (NP246 I think) in it but took it out and swapped in a manual lever t-case. The problem is that they don't have a true 2WD function. There is always power going to the front driveshaft. Not good on a lifted truck with an axle not designed for it. I'm not sure if a 95' would be the same though, mines was out of an 01'.

Re: swap to drivers side drop xfer case and axle
What I bought is a 2005 NV4500 and tcase. It is lever shift. I am wanting to find out what is the best option for a solid front axle that is full time fwd. i am also concerned about steering. One suggestion is to get a 2000 or so dodge and cut and graft the entire front frame. i am going to look at one on monday. Does anyone know the frame width on a 2000 dodge 3500 4x4? I think it is a dana 60, but not sure.

A 205 shouldn't have power to the front output.

Re: swap to drivers side drop xfer case and axle
The current plan doesn't involve the np205. I am looking into using a 2000 dodge front axle. That gets me the drivers side diff. One option is to take the dodge front clip since it is a 4 link with coils and grafting it to my frame. In this case, I would use another frame and save this k20 frame. I have several more. This is the leading option so far.
Another options is to use only the parts needed from the dodge frame to transport the 4 link over to my frame. This entails making a lot of parts. Got to love plasma. Another option is to remove everything from the dodge axle and use the leaf spring setup on my frame. My concern with this is making sure I get all the pinion angle and steering stuff right. probably the simplest option, but what fun is that. Anyone done something like this? |

Re: swap to drivers side drop xfer case and axle
New plan on the nv4500 to dana 44 connection. It looks like the best solution to me is the NP241C passenger side drop 32 spline mechanical speedometer. Well there goes the BW4401 and the NP205 with the high angle shaft to the spare parts room.
That makes for the n-teenth change in only 2 weeks. New plan is; 71 k20 flatbed dually 427ci BB NV4500/dana 241C Here it is with the 95 dually setup mocked up. Doug Last edited by doug70; 01-17-2010 at 09:24 AM. |

Re: swap to drivers side drop xfer case and axle
I was going to say a NP241 would probably work good for you.

Re: swap to drivers side drop xfer case and axle
Yeh, but That is still mechanical. I am just curious on what the Pro's and Con's are of the axels from the 72 Dana to the 79 F-250 Dana. Size, similarities Axle if I need to move the axle perches if the steering will be a problem and what I may need to change. It might be a bit much for this project, but it would defiantly be unique and cool when done

Re: swap to drivers side drop xfer case and axle
What do you mean the rotation on the ford D44 is reversed? How does changing from passenger drop to driver drop change the rotation of the drive shaft?

Re: swap to drivers side drop xfer case and axle
Sanitysbane,
He means it a high pinion axle, or as Dana/Spicer called them reverse spiral. Means the pinion center line is above the axle center line. Typical axles have the pinion center line below the axle (or ring gear) center line. The high pinion allows for less angle on drive lines and for reason's I am not sure of is claimed to be stronger.
