Exposed flywheel?
A recent purchase,69 C10 with a 307/700R4.I noticed today after the first good look at everything the bottomside of the flywheel is exposed,no cover. Its been along time{30+ years}since I have fooled with older trucks,is there supposed to be a cover/shroud over this opening? Thanks,Mel.

Re: Exposed flywheel?
yes there is supposed to be a cover its made of plastic// i've run vehicles for long periods of time without one with no ill effects//some guys say it damages torque converter without the cover, i've never seen proof of that

Re: Exposed flywheel?
A lot of guys will run them without it, but it might be a good idea to put one on. My '70 didn't have one for over five years, and no problems.

Re: Exposed flywheel?
I've been without one for seven years. I realize it's there for a reason and probably should be in place, but I just never did get one.

Re: Exposed flywheel?
yes, you can pick up a used one from a salvage yard for a 700r4. get the bolts too as they are metric. if you pull the parts yourself you should only need a 10mm wrench. you may need to remove the exhaust y-pipe if it is still installed. your truck, if it came from the factory as an automatic, had a metal cover, but the newer ones mid 80's to 98 are plastic. the metal cover will work but you'll still need the 4 metric screws.

Re: Exposed flywheel?
i would get one for a 700r4 to avoid any small differences, and there were a few.

Re: Exposed flywheel?
I ride my Mt bike on the hiway on occasion and I have seen many laying on the side of the road! I think by the time guys get done putting a new tranny in, they get lazy, lose the bolts and use something "close" or just don't bother to tighten them up all the way. Next time I see one I'm going to pick it up.
