So im looking at a new set of aluminum valve covers on ebay cause I like that raw aluminum look but Im on a budget. The ones I have now are orange painted Chromes and leak like nobodys business. The ones I like have no holes in them but they offer a pair for the same price that have one hole each. what are the pros and cons of running valve covers with or without the holes in them. Are the ones without just designed to be drilled where i need them? As always thanks for the advise everyone.

With no holes... how do you add oil? (unless you have an early 327 or a 283 with oil fill in the manifold) Or run a PCV?

running a good PCV system is great for the longterm health of your engine

They are probably spewing oil because you dont have a proper pcv/breather system and crankcase pressure is through the roof. You need the holes. Breather in one side Pcv in the other.

Buy the ones with holes already.

You can drill holes with a holesaw (I did) and the hole was bigger than advertised (1 1/4" but the 1 1/4" breather still leaked around the edges)

You need pcv/breather.

I currently have a set of crappy chrome covers that have 3 holes total. Breather, Pcv, and filler. The ones that I WANT to get have no holes but I just want to make sure im not shooting myself in the foot by getting them. I just hate all the clutter but Im not going to sacrifice the health of my new motor for aesthetics. By the sounds of things Ill be ordering the Holed covers tonight.

The Push on breather and PVC are designed for 1.22" diameter valve cover opening - 1-1/4" (1.250) is too big and will leak - found-out the hard way (ruined valve cover)

1.22" is 1-7/32" or very close to 31mm

Lenox 30912 step drill bit has 1-7/32 (not cheap)

From talking to others - use 1-1/8 to get base opening and then bring it to finish size with deburring tool.

yeah i have a set like that! i just punched a hole in it with a dremel and matched them to the ones that i currently had! works great!

Baffles??? Do the ones with holes have baffles inside below the holes. If not you'll need some. Otherwise your pvc will suck up a lot of oil and you'll be burning oil like crazy!!!

Yep they have baffels

Since were on the subject what are your thoughts on Neoprene valve cover gaskets?

It looks like you are looking at White Performance. If so, get there Neoprene and stud set. It works great and you can a good torque feel with the long stud nuts.

Actually I havent heard of them. Ive just seen people mention neoprene gaskets in other forums and around. Ill check them out though.

To add oil I would just pull the valve cover. Thats what they do with race motors isnt it?
