Lower Questions

Hi All,

I was wondering if a c-notch to the rear frame is necessary for a 3.5 / 5 drop?

Also what suggestions do you have for a drop and tire size (pics if possible) the truck is a 70 LWB. I know all will sit a little different but just looking for more input.

Thanks

Re: Lower Questions

lsteiner, welcome to the board.

No, a c-notch is not required for a 3.5/5 drop.

Here's some shots of my shortstep with a 3.5/5 drop.

Here it is with 15x8 wheels all around and 255/60/15 front 275/60/15 rear.

And here with 17x8 255/50/17 front 17x9.5 275/55/17 rear.

Re: Lower Questions

I am thinking of doing the same drop.

My question is if the driveline on a shortbox(one piece) will need to be shortened so it will not move forward into the transmission?

I've done @ least 3 swb truck arm trucks @ 6" rear drop & did not change the 1pc shaft. It's still a good idea to take measurements & be 100% sure on your particular parts combination.

Re: Lower Questions

It is a good idea to C notch the chassis if you are going to drive the truck much. The is room to do it without, however your trucks rear end travel is severely limited. The original person whe lowered my panel 5" in the rear didn't C notch the frame and every time I hit a good bump in the road the rear end woul smak the bottom of the frame. Not good for the truck nor comfortable to ride in. WES

Re: Lower Questions

Hey Wes,... I'm not sure you can compare trucks with the Panels and 'Burbs.
I've done several trucks with 6" drop rear springs and no notch.
They were all fine.

However,... When I tried the same thing with my old '69 suburban,... I had the same results as you described with your panel.
It definitely needed a notch.
I wonder if the frame is different,... or if it's the extra weight of the roof/glass/etc.?

Re: Lower Questions

I am sure it is the extra weight. The chassis design is the same in that area. They use the same C notch kit. Mine would hit with what seemed to be the smallest of bumps (example: driving down the freeway and coming upon a bridge) I use to own a 68 short stepside, and it was dropped 6" in the rear and it would bump the frame coming into my parking area if I didn't slow down enough. A shock relocator kit helped with that, but it would still bump occasionaly. WES

Re: Lower Questions

If 3-5 is what you want, then go for it. As stated in post above results may varry. I would even do the 6" rear drop if that was what I wanted to do. If you do not C notch you can always go back if your circumstances warrent that. WES

5.5" Front Drop and 6" in back and no c-notch.
Done with Lowering Spindles (in front)with a Shock/Spring kit along with 2" Drop Blocks in the Real.
No shock relocators.
Drives fine.
