Re: faux-tina paint jobs
Hey Malibob
Can you post a closeup of your white roof? i was curious as to what the two tone would look like roughed up. Jocko, i am definitely going to check out whats underneath my paint first. Thats a great idea. and does anyone know a trick to painting the dash with the glass still in. it seems like an area prone to error. thanks dudes. I'm getting a little ramped up about this.

Re: faux-tina paint jobs
I have thought about doing ot to mine. I know there is two other colors under the Orange. This way I van still drive it while I do the body work. I just hatethe down time because it is a running truck and I am going to tear it a part to change out the drums to disc all around and tear the body about to do the body work and paint the frame.

Re: faux-tina paint jobs
Here is a photo of a red and a blue truck, with light colors underneath. They looks ok, but just don't look "quite right"..IMO. The factory didn't use light colored primers on these trucks.

Re: faux-tina paint jobs
looks like a cheap repaint in red years ago that is fading off to see the original paint underneath, not primer...

Re: faux-tina paint jobs
Chizzler, that truck looks great !! I was able to find a longbed that had original patina. I put it on a shortbed chassis and painted the bed to match. Used the original tailgate, wheel tubes, and header board. Sean

Re: faux-tina paint jobs
Not much to it.we started by sanding with 320.didnt even blow it off after.then the first coat was black put on with a brush.(yes a home depot paint brush).second coat we mixed orange and black to make brown.we put it on with a roller (yes a home depot roller).we put too coats.second coat was mainly on the hood and roof and bed rails.(nice and thick) third coat we sprayed the blue with a harbor freight gun.fourth coat we used white header spray paint and sprayed it from far back just misting it.after it was dry we started wet sanding with 1000 grit for a long time.you need to take your time and only break through the layers that you want.if you push to hard you will find bare metal.the slower you go the more first layer (black) you can find.after your happy with it you take some red scotch brite pads and hit the whole thing.this will take the sheen from the wet sanding away.hope this helps.we used duplicolor from napa.

Re: faux-tina paint jobs
I dont have any close ups of the white roof on mine. I will be honest though. I plan on re-doing mine in gloss and rubbing it through- think I will like it a little better.

Re: faux-tina paint jobs
There is a guy in my area with a mid 60's VW Bug with a faux patina job. It looks like the areas were sanded down to bare metal and then he cleared the whole car. Now its shiny with a patina look. Its cool, but when you get close you see the shine. That part I dont like.

Re: faux-tina paint jobs
I thought the faux-tina was soo cool I ordered the video from Trucks. They sent me a video labled faux-tina but it was just a recap of several other episodes. I called their 800 number several times and emailed several times and never got any response. I will never order anything from Trucks or Horsepower TV again.
Thought I would let you know before you get ripped off like I did.

My truck has quite a bit of real patina, so I will use that as a guide if I get around to doing it.

Re: faux-tina paint jobs
Yeah, stick to the online version. Like I said, they sent me the wrong video then ignored all my phone calls and emails. No refund....nothing.

Re: faux-tina paint jobs
I posted this up many times wish i had more photos. I am really not into the fake patina stuff but when i had my truck the body shop painted it red oxide primer and I ended up not liking the color. So I primered it all black and left the top part white. After sometime I missed the orange color and tried sanding it down and got to tired to finish the sanding and it ended up like this. Wish I had more pictures of it but got lost when comp crashed.
