From drag back to street, my '84
This is my '84 Chevy I've been working on for almost a year now. It was a drag truck when I got it and am currently converting it back to a street truck with a few mods here and there. Plans are to put a new motor and tranny in it, do a few body mods to give it a cleaner look, leave it lowered for now until I can bag it, and basically have a clean looking ride when I'm done. I'm having to replace a lot of stuff the previous owner had removed from the truck. I got lucky and shortly after I got this truck I was able to buy a complete parts truck from a friend of mine for just $250 so replacing most the parts won't be too expensive. Anyways, just thought I'd share my project with ya. I'll post more pics as I get more work done.
400 SB with massive cam and a lot of performace parts. Also lowered with drag slicks. Had some bodywork done but was very poorly done. Motor and tranny pulled. Replacing with a completely rebuilt 350 and TH350 tranny. Fast forward a bit. Stock fuel lines back in place. Gas tank reinstalled. Rear diff replaced with a stock 10 bolt with 3.73's. Also replaced doors with one's that still had the locks and door handles. And here's a pic of my tailgate I started on a few weeks ago. These are some 15x8 ralley's I traded for the drag slicks off the truck. I think I did pretty good on that trade. And this is from today. Got the firewall bare so I can get all the old paint stripped and get it in new paint before I put in the motor and tranny. Also pulled out all the aftermarket wiring the previous owner had installed. I'm suprised this truck didn't burn to the ground, lol. |

Re: From drag back to street, my '84
Thanks for the welcomes guys. I did a little more work today after I got off. Been slowly cleaning up the firewall. It's a really time consuming task. Hopefully tomorrow I can get it finished up and maybe in some primer.

Re: From drag back to street, my '84
That looks good! I worked on mine more today and got most of the firewall cleaned up. I'm posting from my phone so I'll see of this link works. Hopefully tomorrow I can finish a few spots and get it in primer. Also, what have you guys done to eleminate this bracket that holds the steering column in place? I want a cleaner look and have an idea how to make it work but would like to see what y'all have done.
Here's the bracket I was talking about doing away with. What I thought about doing was cutting the column bracket off this piece and just welding it directly to to the fire wall and then smoothing it in like it was meant that way. What do ya'll think? Now that I'm back home, I'm thinking of heading back out there and pulling a late nighter and try to get this thing in primer. If I do, I'll post some pics when I get back.

Re: From drag back to street, my '84
Alright, last update for the night. I managed to get the rest of the firewall stripped, got the brake booster bracket stripped and welded back to the firewall, and even got some self etching primer on. Tomorrow I plan to paint it black and start hooking everything back up in the cab so I can move it around again.
Bracket stripped Bracket welded back onto the firewall And finally some primer. Looks so much better than the old paint already. They probably aren't the best pics because I'm taking them with my phone as I get done with each section. Hopefully soon I can start on the outer bodywork.

Re: From drag back to street, my '84
After church today I got my firewall painted. Next step will be to reinstall everything and get it mobile again. After I painted the firewall I tore down the brake booster to get it ready for paint too. I won't get as extensive with this as I did the firewall but basically just clean it up a little. Once everything is back on the firewall, I plan to start doing body work on the fenders and then working my way back until all the body work is done.
