One Ton Axles/Donor?

Alright I am ready to upgrade my axles to 1 tons. I am doing as I run a pretty hot 350 motor, lower gears and 36" tires. I have already broke a front axle once.

So I am looking to get a set of 1 tone axles for my 72 blazer. What should I get? What is the easiest swap? I would of course what 4:10 or lower gears and would be adding lockers fron and rear. I will be building the axles myself so no shop fees just parts.

Re: One Ton Axles/Donor?

I would look around for 80's CUCV truck or blazer. I'm pretty sure they all came with a 14 bolt and locker out back and a D60 up front. As for ease of swapping, I have no idea.

Re: One Ton Axles/Donor?

I got mine from a 78 Chevy Military truck. It was sold at auction for 1000.00 Lived life as a wheeler for awhile. Then a buddy used the axles for his truck. He wrecked it 3 months after it was done. I bought the axles complete and rebuild for 1500.00 Dana 60 front with crossover steering and traclok, 14 bolt rear with rear disk and detroit. Bolted right in the front. My rear is a freak thing I had to move the spring pads. But mine is a freak of nature yours would probably bolt right in.

If you can find one. They are usually cheap cause they don't have titles. 4.56 gears and posi or lockers (not sure which they came with) from the factory in these trucks. Mine were rebuilt with new so ?? I do remember him saying they came with something in them and the ratio.

Re: One Ton Axles/Donor?

CUCV Blazers did not have a Dana 60 front like the trucks did. They were 8 lug Dana 44. I got my Dana 60 and 14 bolt out of a 1 ton crew cab and the only modification I had to make was the shock mounts on the rear.

Re: One Ton Axles/Donor?

So there is no real major fit issues for our blazers? I am used to jeeps where everything that was not stock has to be modified. I will start looking around for a 60 and a 14 bolt. Like mentioned I am building myself to save a little money. HTe axles I have are the 10 bolt and 44. They have 4.56 gears and lockers. I am probable going to put those under my CJ when I do a larger lift etc.

Re: One Ton Axles/Donor?

There is alot of misinformation in this thrread already. The CUCV blazers are nothing special at all, 3.08s and 10 bolt front and rear.

I believe the military 1 tons are 84-86? They all came with 4.56s and a detroit rear. The 1028 military ambulances and radio trucks came with a trac loc in the front.

If you get a 14 bolt out of a true one ton the sping perches will not need to be moved. A 3/4ton will have wider spring pad spacing 42" instead of the 40" you need. If you have a welder it is a little grinding and a BFH and you can make quick work of it.

1978 was the 1st year of the dana 60 and the easiest way to spot one is the 3 u-bolts, the passenger side has 2 bolts or studs going into the top of the pumpkin.

1977 was the first year for GM Dana 60 front.

Re: One Ton Axles/Donor?

Despite the mis-information comment earlier here is what I was talking about. No CUCV blazers. In my post what I was saying is trucks. Here are two on ebay. Expensive but they list the axle information I was speaking to earlier.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/M1008...item483f1d252d

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1984-...item4cf52c7fb3

Mine did come from a 1978 truck, it has the 3 u-bolts and has lockers front and rear with 4.56 gears. The disk brakes and crossover steering were added (very easy to do with these axles).

In addition, the older ones would not have the 6.2 these do, or the 208 Tcase. Mine had SB350 (probably not original) and TH400 and 205.

Re: One Ton Axles/Donor?

For the rear:
I picked up a 14 bff; it came out of a P30 van. (think Frito Lay truck) It has the right spring perches to fit under the Blazer and has 4.10 gears. I was going to do a disc brake swap anyway so I found another donor and decided to sell this one.

I picked up a late model AAM 14 bff from a 2004 Duramax pickup. It has factory rear disc brakes but will need new perches..... Its slightly wider then the P30 truck rear.
