72 gmc long bed floor

my bed has some bad spots and two bad cross sills, the rest of the bedsides are good, I was looking into new flooring panels ad then saw how pricey they are, I can get a 1/8" steel diamond plate for about 150 dollars, 60"x98.250 and then cut out the fender wells , drill the holes and bolt in a new floor, has anyone done this and how did it work out, I also heard that road sign posts are almost identical in dimension to the factory cross sills, any input is really appreciated.
