Tubless Or Not

Just bought 67 half ton pick-up, six lug wheels of coarse. This thing has been sitting for a while and one tire is shot, won't hold air so i'm gonna have to put a tire on it just to get it home. The wheel and tire on it now have an inner tube in it(has the original wheels),anybody know if you have to run tubes with these old wheels?
Thanks,

if its a one piece wheel, then you don't need tubes. if I'm not mistaken, if you have steel belted radials, you don't want tubes in them.

Re: Tubless Or Not

sometimes if wheels got really pitted they used tubes//but 1/2 ton c10 came tubeless from the factory in 67

Re: Tubless Or Not

Back when I worked at a service station, we would on rare occasions tube a tire. It had to be a really new AND really expensive tire to justify the cost.

Angry Re: Tubless Or Not

Great, thanks for all the info fellows but now have another problem trying to get this truck home. As i say it's been sitting for about 10 years and to make matters worse, the old man I bought it from had for whatever reason taken the right front wheel and tire off, anyway I put it back on and when tightening the lug nuts down realized that wheel is locked up. Put a 3 foot breaker bar on it, still won't break loose. Anybody have any suggestions? Can't see any means on back of the hub to back break shoes off, is it different than newer cars that have the slot?

The slot is in the front if it's original. Gotta pull off the tire and rim.

Agree - but put your lug nuts on first so if you manage to hit a lug stud you won't bugger it up. Keep the end of the stud inside the nut.

One more thing when doing this - you can't use a hammer that is too big. A sledge hammer with a nice long handle works good for this operation.

Years ago I was with da-burb at one of his secret junk yards looking to get a new axel for the rear end in my pick-up. The little old man laughed at the hammer I brought with to whack the drum off the junk vehicle. He comes back with a sledge hammer and one whack later I was pulling the now free drum off.

Re: Tubless Or Not

Agreed, BFH is the best method for freeing up drums.

Re: Tubless Or Not

I had a front brake drum come apart (3 pieces) when I was going down the highway in my 67. Bfh might sound like a good idea to get the wheel spining but I wouldn't trust the integrity of the drum after.

After an angry woman attacked my 4 brand new BFG mud terrains with an ice pick to their side walls, the shop saved them for me by installing tubes. Saved my bacon for sure, and ran those tires till they were good and used up.
